Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Can you pedal at a Scottish snap cadence?

Oh. Of course. But I meant like if you're just riding around and you find yourself spinning slowly up a hill. I think gearing should be based on comfort anyway.

Well in the moment it's not terribly useful information though it can help you if you feel like you could spin faster but aren't sure if it would be efficient to do so, I suppose. But I would think really it would be most useful as a long term guide. You might see that you typically spin 15 rpm slower than you should so it would be beneficial to gear down and pick up your cadence a bit.
