Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Drop Out question

I recently put my fixed gear bike together and I think I tightened the chain a bit too much. The bolts that goes into the drop outs is just on the edge. Does anybody got any experience with the same issue? Is it safe and what can happen if it drops out … ? It also makes some noise when I ride it …

I also think the pin on my chain is not put in correctly. Is it still safe to ride?

Noise is probably from overtight chain. Abit of chainslack is good for you. Once slack, never back.
And the pics dont work.

Like the others, I can't see the attachment.
Assuming one is near by, I'd suggest going to a bike shop. Any mechanic will be able to answer your questions on the spot ... and fix any problems. This is also a really good way of getting to know a local shop.

Thanks for reply! Try the pictures now. Probably smart to just swing by a bike shop yes!

Your wheel is safe in the dropouts but it allows no room for slippage. If you can add a link (or half link) and get the axle further into the dropouts, you'd at least feel a lot safer (I'd do it).

I'm not sure what's happening with that chain, but the pin shouldn't look like that so something isn't right - you should really struggle to pick which link you've just joined.

Bike mechanics are humans just like the rest of us and while some are idiots, most are happy to help, to advise or just chat about bikes. Building a relationship with your lbs will pay more in pleasure and advice than you'll ever save over the internet.

It looks to me like you left part of your chain tool in your chain.

That pin looks dangerous.
Also, half link chains are heavy, stretch fast and crappy. Just get a normal chain, and move the wheel back in the dropouts.

Whatever that pin is holding your chain together does not belong there. Find the correct pin, take out that link and put a new one in, or buy a new chain. The noise you're experiencing may be that piece of metal rubbing or catching somewhere it shouldn't.

As europa says, your wheel should be fine in the dropouts. They have full bite on the metal, and I wouldn't even bother about putting another link back in. (Except for the one that replaces the one with that goofy pin in it)

Bump because I really want to know what the hell happened with that pin.
