Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

riding fixed again after three years

I just finished putting together a new bike and took a ride last night for the first time in three years; trying to get into cycling again after starting a family...
I was amazed how natural it all felt still: leg braking, speed modulation, pedaling with no dead spots etc. I know what they say about riding a bike but I expected a little re-learning curve with a fixie but I guess not!
anyone else ever experience this?

I had a somewhat similar experience with babies getting in the way of my riding addiction. It was more of a 6-12 month hiatus and going from riding/living in chicago with 50+ miles/day average midwest flat land riding, to moving to durham, NC with hills. my milage dropped because there was really no long commute to do over here, and the bike awareness in this area is nothing like chicago. Riding and braking came back no problem, but my 48X15 gear setup had to change to 48X16, and now it's 48X18. It took awhile to get used to the hills but well worth it. Finding straight and flat smooth areas to sprint is unfortunately far and few around here.

The new family situation does add fun to riding around with a double wide trailer on the back of my bike. Installation of a brake was a necessity with the trailer.

You have any child attachments (carrier, trailer..) on your ride for the little chamaco's?

Yeah I use an MEC trailer that I've had for years. first it was a stroller now I take him to school in it! I have a three speed bike for it now, but I did tow it using a fixie, a bit of a challenge, especially going down a steep hill with it jolting back and forth behind you...
