Suicide hub reconsideration

My apologies to anyone who may have listened to me spout off on the merits of using a standard thread-on hub with a BB lock ring and loctite. Sure, there are many old unused beautiful hubs floating around for little to no money, but is it worth it? After several thousand miles on one of my rear "converted" wheels, when I made it home today, I heard a strange noise in the rear. The lock ring was loose around the axel. The cog held up alright. Fortunately I have a proper hub on its way so I can rebuild the wheel.

My theory now is that it isn't a matter of if, but rather a matter of when... and I don't want to mess around with constant vigilence to make sure it is OK.

good for you for being open minded...

...and not wanting to injure yourself.

The problem is obviously that you used a lockring.
