Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Lost my job... What's next?

Yea! I got fired! I'm unemployed, and have a couple prospects this week, but the big recurring nightmare is doing a fixed tour of America. I've heard it has been done, but it is sort of urban myth stuff, where someone knows someone who knows someone that had a brother who did it. What are the possibilities? I mean for two years I've commuted on a fixie for over two-three years, and have done a couple fixed centuries. I just don't know if doing day after day with a loaded bike is that great an idea. I know the gearing I use day to day would have to change for the load, and especially with doing hills/mountains.
what's your experience, that friend who had a friend who did it, what happened? Does riding with the front wheel an extra rear work? Just a lot of questions on my hands.

Sorry to hear about your job, naisme... Hope you find another soon.

I don't know much on touring, but you might want to check this thread for some info...

I did a fully loaded tour a few years back on a bike with gears but I don't think it should too much to handle. Since you'll have all your tools with you, maybe take along a extra chainring/ chain combination so you can change the bike over to match the changing conditions.

Singlespeed might be better than fixed. The same gearing that will get you up the steepest hills will tear your legs up on the way back down.

I tried looking for it, but I can't think up any really good search terms, but someone posted a link a while back about a guy who rode fixed from Seattle to Minnesota (I think). He had a day-by-day journal about his ride, and it was pretty neat, if I recall.

If you can afford to go on tour seems like you can afford to just hang out for a while too huh? Haha, not quite as inspired, but I lost my job a little while ago and that is what I've been doing. I've actually got just enough money saved to make the Thailand journey for a month or so, which is what I'm hoping to do soon..

As far as riding cross-country goes, seems like you could probably do it, but you might end up in the middle of nowhere at the end of the day a lot. I am curious how one coordinates the trip so they end up somewhere interesting/fun most of the time..??

I took the U.S. map and circled the cities where I had friends or family and then connected the dots. In between turned out to be the most fun. Things just tend to happen to you on two wheels that wouldn't in a car. People want to ask you questions, buy you dinner, let you stay in there home; that kind of stuff.

It took us 4 months, so if your looking to get away...

I was friends with that guy in high school, and I saw him shortly after he finished his trip, so I can back up his statement.

The bottle opener on his water bottle mount is the best thing I've ever seen!

Was out in central California on a project in the late 80's and remember reading
about some guy who was going to ride the length of Highway 101 standing the whole way. He might have taken the seat off so he wouldn't cheat. I wondered what's with this? Then I remembered I was in California. Anybody know this guy?
