Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Buying a complete fix. Budget: 700 - 1100

I know. Building your own is better and all that. But i simply do not have the time for that. My old one got stolen from a guarded public bike parking (Schwinn Madison 2009) and i really want a new one. i don't have a lot of knowledge about good/bad parts and what to look for exactly. Thats where you people come in.

Few things to keep in mind:
- My budget: 700-1100 USD
- It's going to be used as a daily commuter bike (not going to park in public parkings anymore thought...)
- I want to be able to ride along with friends that have geared racing bikes , so it has to be a sporty, race model. (I managed fine on my madison, but was thinking of playing around with my gear ratio to get a higher topspeed. I dont mind the loss of acceleration speed).
- I like persuit bars, but i dont mind if it has drop bars. I'll probably want them both anyways.
- It would be nice if the shipping costs to the Netherlands wouldn't be 300 usd or something.
- I looked around a lot already. I like the look of the state bicycle contender but i have the feeling that every single positive thing on the interwebs about this bike is written by state employees themselves. The new state undefeated also looks nice.
- I also like the look of the Jamis Sputnik 2012

Thanks!

I was in your same situation and same price range. I researched every bike I could find, and ended up ordering an Eighth Inch Scrambler. I upgraded the wheelset and a few other things, and it came to about $550, and shipping to US was free. It should arrive Friday, and I can't wait to ride it. Every review I read on it was excellent.

Thanks. Looks nice indeed, could be perfect for my needs, but the shipping to my country is 170 usd. I would rather spend that on upgrades... Have fun with yours

Do you have local bike shops? call them.

A bunch of guys from the US aren't going to have the best input on what you can get halfway across the world.

Add for pedals and foot retention. Also bars if you don't want the stock track drops.

Thanks. Not so many bike shops in the Netherlands that sell high quality fixies. Just the cheap commercial stuff.

I bought the Madison second hand in Paris. Craigslist is big there as well. Not so much in the Netherlands...
