Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Tensioner screws, do I need em?

So I have to disassemble and reassemble my bike quite a bit and it's becoming a pain in the ass to have to spend a ton of my time unscrewing them since they like to get stuck a lot and I'm really starting to get sick and tired of them. But do I really need them? I know most fixed gear bikes don't have them and I've heard the wheel sliding forward in the dropout isn't that much of a threat long as you have your rear wheel tightened properly.

No, you definitely don't need them. They are mainly a convenience that makes it easier to get the correct chain tension adjustment. If you are going to have a chain tensioner, get something like a Surly Tugnut, which can be easily removed when removing the rear wheel.

I bought a pair thinking they would be helpful, but have found that its just as easy for me to adjust tension without them. Took them off after several weeks just because they're unnecessary.

You could be considered a Fred without them.
