Eighth inch scrambler.

Slightly over your budget but a pake rumrunner frame and fork plus an ird technoglide headset will set you off with a solid budget build.
**** a quick look on universalcycles shows 324 before shipping and taxes for all three. Under 300 at outsideoutfitters. If you dont like the unicrown fork scrod told me in the past he can sell the carbon fork for the pake french separately although that will be a little over your budget. |
leader 725 closeouts are 299.
i'd say that's the best thing you're going to get under 300 bucks. |

What about the Fyxation frameset?
Eastside Chromoly Steel Fixed Gear Frameset | Fyxation They seem to make fairly good quality components. Frames are made in Taiwan apposed to China and I was very impressed with the quality of the 250g seatpost I'm using from them that was only $30. And personally I think their copper frame looks really nice. Of couse for a similar price you can build a Rum Runner which now uses butted tubes |

True. I just can't imagine doing a budget build with steel unless you're a fan of riding a heavy ass bike that feels like a tank. I've had 5 steel bikes and all of them were a bummer to ride compared to even a low end aluminum build.

If I had 800ish to drop on a good steel frameset with a carbon fork, maybe it'd be okay. It's all personal preference. |
Steel frame with carbon fork, oh geez. weight is not the end all be all imo.
|
My 2011 Soma Rush build - steel frame with steel fork - Weight = 18.5 lbs
My Dolan Pre Cursa build - aluminum frame with carbon/aluminum fork - Weight = 18.7 lbs |
I've heard I could get an Aventon frame with a carbon fork for close to 300 and that would be the best quality for the money.

I wasn't saying you can't build a nice ass steel bike. I just don't think you can build a light one on a small budget. (Not a weight weenie but lugging around a 25 pound bike sucks if you ride a lot of miles) |

But how much did you spend on components?

(Not a weight weenie but lugging around a 25 pound bike sucks if you ride a lot of miles) Last I checked, the budget Kilo tt doesn't weigh 25 pounds. also, to the OP, here is a cheap option BikeIsland.com - Bicycle Parts, Accessories and Clothing at Affordable Prices with Free Shipping |

Go do some squats. I love when people automatically assume that an aluminum frame will be 10x lighter than a quality steel frame.
Last I checked, the budget Kilo tt doesn't weigh 25 pounds. I've ridden aluminum and steel, and was just stating that I loathe steel, as most of the bikes I've ridden were heavier. This guy isn't buying a kilo tt, he's trying to build a bike on a budget. If he's only willing to drop 300 on a frameset, I think it's safe to assume he isn't spending a lot on the other components, therefore he's going to end up with a fairly heavy bike. You people get too sensitive in the steel versus aluminum debate, I admitted that it was all preference. If people can constantly say that the kilott is the best bike under 600 dollars and everyone on earth should buy one, I don't think it's wrong for me to say that I think the leader 725 is the best frameset under 300 right now. |

Except that the the 2015 Leader 725 frameset costs $499 with a carbon/aluminum fork or $649 with a full carbon fork.
I said in my earlier post 2014 closeouts. I wouldn't recommend the new one to someone who was asking for a 300 dollar deal. I'm mouthy and clueless at times, but I'm not stupid. |
I think this dude's threads make us all a little dumber.
