On St. Pat's day I left a party and I thought I was doing alright. People expressed a little bit of concern when I told them I was riding home and I said, "Hey... if I was walking or driving you could worry... I'm on a bike, I'll be fine." I remember leaving, the first block, and then locking my bike up at my apartment. The 15 or so blocks in the middle are a complete blur, but I remember getting home and saying to my buddy, "Hey... no brakes, no falls, I'm rad."

over the summer i got a bunch of beers in me before going to a music festival
the way to the festival included this long hill with potholes i carelessly bombed down. a rusted nail flatted my tire and the potholes bent the hell out of the rim. this was because i didnt notice the flat until i came to a stop. between my friend and i - we had no patch kit nor phones on us. so i let him go on forth and i walked my bike back home... uphill. in the sweltering texas heat. and you KNOW how bad alcohol + heat mixes... it gave me migraine of a lifetime... but i managed to go get home, ride to the festival on my mtb, and catch 2 songs by neko case before passing out on the grass |
I'm going to put in my worst drunken ride, since I don't know the first :
No sleep. Take expired Zoloft or Ridalin or something my dad had laying around. Go to bar to see some band I don't even remember who. Smoke in cooler of bar, since I work there. Drink free beer and shots, because I work there. Get carried down the stairs, because the opening act hasn't started and I'm FCUCUCEKED. Somehow unlock my bike. Somehow ride it home. Wake up the next morning with a chunk out of my chin needing stitches, dried blood coming out of both of my ears, and a REALLY bad headache. Get jaw wired shut two days later. Bills I'm still paying off. There's a lot you can do while drunk. Smart, no. That particular case, it was everything else that made it so bad. I still ride drunk. But I've learned when to walk the bike now when needed.... Or at least JUST be drunk.... |
4th of July, riding around with a internal frame pack completely full of ice and beer and 6 other friends on bikes. After watching the fireworks at the stadium heading back toward campus, we cut through a cemetery. I took a header over a low tombstone and landed face first next to a larger stone with my last name engraved in it. "Okay God. I got the message. Good one."

first drunken ride....
forget about it, but there was either a bmx bike or yz 80 involved, but too many years back to remember.... last drunken ride.. last night...2:45am riding down market street so drunk the only time i stop/slow down is to throw up more....throwing up so hard at 6th and market crackheads try and pass me their pipe to ease my pain :D by the time i make it to the bus terminal...i can't stand up anymore...bus driver has to secure my bike to the bike rack...plus wake me up when we hit oakland, where 2 alameda county deputies laugh at me as i somehow miss my pedals and fall into a fence...i don't think they thought i was going to ride away, cause their expressions changed somewhat as i sprinted into the darkness... |

Only slightly off-topic, but I've got a question:
I've heard of 'pub rides', but living in a small town, I've never been a part of one. What are they, exactly? Is it a casual group ride from bar to bar, or is it a more 'serious' ride that just ends at a bar? Or both? We have a fairly large beer festival in Durham every October, and I was thinking of organizing a ride in conjunction with the festival this year. I don't know how many people around the area would be into that... |
pub ride - bike = pub crawl

Another drunken ride home was this past summer. I was coming home from a "martini night" at a buddy's place who lives just on the other side of this park. When I first got on my bike near his apartment I had a hard time keeping it on the sidewalk. Within about 100 feet I got my stuff together enough to ride pretty straight. When I hit the park I thought to myself, "it's dark, I'm drunk, this sucks, I want to go to bed", so I went faster. Well... my stomach didn't appreciate the extra effort and the martinis came up. I didn't bother to stop to yack, I just leaned my head to the left and gave it a good over the arm hurl... twice. After a bit I came to a bridge over the river. It was a calm summer night, so I stopped to listen to the river and look at the stars when I noticed my arm was cold. I looked down and saw that I didn't completely clear my arm. I shrugged, gave it a quick squirt with my water bottle, and went home.
I've been pretty lucky riding drunk. So far no major spills or run ins with police. I think I ride better than I walk when I'm drunk, and others have told me the same. |
These are some great stories. Anyone ride there bike when they were stoned? or were you just to lazy to do it at the time.
|
This is a bad rap for riders. If you can't walk, you better sleep in situ.
|
I get plenty drunk and while I'm not one to condone operating any piece of machinery while drunk, this does look pretty cool. Of course you don't necessarily have to put anything alcoholic in it.

Any good stoner worth his weight in bud can do anything when high... - just not at peak performance levels. |

I don't know how many people around the area would be into that... We call it a "bike-a-thon" here. (Sponsors and benefitting a good cause) Bunch of official stops at bars for hydration. Something like 3000 riders, in years past - I did the ride for 10 years, we made about 8 stops on a 50 mile ride. Shot of tequila, sprint your arse off to get to the next bar. This is where that saying "it's like a riding a bike" comes in. If I had to think about it I couldn't have done it. But loads of fun and I never crashed until the year I decided to do it by boat in the back bays. Organize it. It'll ride. |
Blacked out most of '01-'04.

Just a little early today, 3:50 am. Have bookwork and sketches to get done before I attempt to ride. Yesterday, on a very narrow, potentially dangerous bridge, I had people pull up next to me in a car and ask for directions. |

Sweet-ass! Do those cages come with Surly's flask, or are they a custom job? I see they both look different.

Yup. All the time. It's the best way to start the day. Or end it for that matter. |
