Sadly the only area around here I feel even somewhat safe on is A1A (the road that runs along the beach). At least you have a great view the whole time.

Check out trail link, there are a few multiuse trails not too far away. One goes through the everglades and lots of wildlife. One around lake Okeechobee, and Miami I believe has a network of trails.

Nope haven't done any of them.

I'm down here for work. But like Tech420 said, the only place I feel relatively safe is on A1A and the roads that run parrallel to the beach. A1A has a bike lane which is plenty wide, but in some areas it cuts out after a couple of intersections, and there's some construction by Ft. Lauderdale Beach and on a bridge up north by a lighthouse where I would advise you to take the lane. On A1A people drive 40-50 mph so it can be a little unnerving, but there's plenty of people on bikes around so I would HOPE drivers are looking for them.

That being said, while A1A doesn't have many curves or any elevation, its a beautiful ride, especially in the morning watching the sun rise over the ocean.

Shark Valley is must for any tourist...
Key Biscayne is very popular
A1A north outfo Ft. Lauderdale
HollyWood Beach to piddle around
and then the infamous 'bloddy 27'
Oleta St. Park has killer mtb trails

And I always had fun crusing around South Beach on my mtn bike

A1A north of Deerfield Beach is the place. Even better is getting north of Boca Raton. Great ocean views from Delray all the way up to Palm Beach. Its my regular route during my winter vacations.

Back from vacation

So after 14 days 2 flats and 500km on my bike I have to say that you guys are right. I did do the Fort Lauderdale to -almost Delray beach track a few times and is was the most enjoyable, especially when you get to highland park the beaches there are amazing. I have to give a thumbs up to Florida for their expanded bike lanes. One thing I Won't forget though, is the heat an humidity- wow!
I'll post a couple of pictures later

LOL..I deal with that heat and humidity on a daily basis, I know what you mean, it's brutal even for the locals. The winters are much, much nicer.

One thing you quickly learn is carry a third bottle in a jersey pocket. You'll need to drink more than you think you will - one bottle every 10mi is my rule of thumb.

Best not to forget that. I used to get ragged on by a few friends up north for using a Camelbak. A few came down for a ride a few years back and kept running out of their own, both left with 70 ounce packs.
