Please recommend bike shop in the Gwinnett/Decatur area. I've been going to Performance, REI, Bike South but find all these shops lacking. Intown Bikes is nice but too much of a drive to be my "local" shop.
I'm not looking to purchase a bike soon. More for mechanics, parts, accessories, etc..

The other alternative is looking for LBS's in the yellow pages and trying them out one by one. I know that in Cobb County (where my fiance lives) there are a number of shops scattered about, and I'm developing a feel for their strengths and weaknesses as I'm required to use shops for quickly getting supplies. I suspect Gwinnett has a substantial cycling community also, so there are probably a number of LBS's there.

Hi DMF.
I too was going to recommend Intown Bicycles.
Most bike shops in Gwinnett are in the Duluth area - which isn't close to E. Atl or Decatur.
Click here to see a list of some of the *good* shops in the Atl area.

Outback in the Decatur-ish part of town, but I don't know much about their mechanics. I adore the folks at Peachtree Bikes, and REI really helped me out recently in an emergency.

Back in the mid-90s I used to hang at Outback a bit, but I understand that it's changed hands since then, and it's as far for me as Intown.
I'm in South Gwinnett so Duluth is quite a drive too. Anyone familiar with Tucker Bikes, or Bicycle Doctor in Norcross?

Great shop, just kinda small. It's at 4107 Lawrenceville Highway (at the corner of Lawrenceville Highway and Main St/Idlewood Rd).

Outback is okay, their best wheel man moved to Chicago. Their best mechanic left last month. The have a few well meaning souls there, now.

Having worked at Bike South for two years, I know well the lack of general knowledge that exists there. (the owner is cheap and insists on hiring young, inexperienced kids. It works well as long as there is someone there who knows what they are doing and can keep the kids in line. Right now there's not).
As for repairs, the mechanics are good and back up their work. I've never been in a shop that is as good as B.S. for orders. They do orders from three distributers every week and the system is organized better than any I've ever seen. Very rarely did I see an order or a customer fall through the cracks. Based on personal experience, that is much more than I can say for many other atlanta shops. If you know what you need, B.S. can be good. If you need real advice (or anything else), I'd say Peachtree is the way to go.
Now its time for Ron to chime in about how he thinks he was slighted by Fred because he's old even though I saw several people cycle through the shop who were over 50.
As always, take any advice here with a grain of salt. I personally won't shop at bike south anymore, but not because of poor service.

For folks south of Atlanta I'd say go to Epic Bikes or the bike shop over on Willow Lane in McDonough--can't remember it's name...Someone told me it was Bike Center in Stockbridge--only moved to a new location but the Trek store in McDonough employs most of the old people I remember who worked at Bike Center in Stockbridge. I suppose it's possible that it's all related...who knows.
In the Decatur area--I've only been to bicycle south--it's where I bought my bike. I had done my own research about the bike I wanted so I didn't ask for much other than a fitting. When it came to purchasing a bike rack...I might as well have asked my dog. I love the area it's in and don't really have any problems with the shop but I can see why people say they aren't knowledgeable.

Bike Center moved to Willow Lane temporarily while the new Trek Store was being built. Same crew as always.
Just FYI--I looked at this link and it mentions Bike Center in Stockbridge and Peachtree City. These shops don't exist per se...they've become Trek Bicycle Stores. Kind of disappointed me...nothing against Trek, I just like variety!

I was in Bike south in 2001 or 2002 (when I was employed and not looking for a job) and the owner struck up a conversation with me and said something like, "we could use someone like you in the store." I guess he forgot that when I was unemployed and looking for a job in 2003.
I never could understand why he doesn't want to hire "older" people when (I'm guessing) 40-50% of his customers are over 40. I guess Ann was the only exception to the rule.

Tim (the owner) is a great guy and very knowledgeable.
Bicycles Unlimited in Peachtree City is another great shop for the folks on the south side. Ask for Steve.

I think I met him today--I've been in there before but never purchased anything since they are geared more towards road bikes and that's not quite my interests. I went by today though to upgrade my saddle and found him very helpful and nice!

Nor-Cal rider here.
Any bike shop that rent out semi high end road bikes in the North Atlanta area?
I'm being sent out for a training class in Atlanta and I'm still debating if I should bring a bike or just rent one out.
Or....
can somebody lend me a bike during my stay in Atlanta? I ride a 52-53cm bike FWIW
Any information out there is greatly appreciated.
thanks
