Rode today like most days. It was supposed to rain all week but somehow I lucked out (with the help of Doppler radar) and avoided getting wet.

Got out early today and beat the rain. My mileage is finally back to what it was before the latest surgery. Rode 22.2 miles. :)
Stopped at the bike shop to show the tire jack to Sherry. She'd never seen one and liked it after I told her my "success" story. |

Literally brung home the bacon yesterday. My 3rd ride since last year.
Stopped in at Tom Thumb and got some bacon, cinnamon roll TastyKakes and a 2 liter bottle of coke. They hung unencumbered from my handlebars. Coming back I was 'bookin' on my alt/beach cruiser down a 4 lane road. 15 mph, then 14 mph then 13 mph.... Two long miles altogether. haa haa Doglets appreciated the bacon. *** The little tan and white dot you see in this picture is 'Buzz' *** |
Got out much earlier today. Rode to the north end of the trail and back to Hernando. Total of 22 miles.
I was rather disappointed. With all the retired vets we have around here I thought I'd see a few patriotic jerseys. Sadly, mine was the only one. :( |

Done a 2 mile leisurely round robin today. Then a ZZZiesta. arghh, I was too lazy to even eat. Update: Four TastyKakes are missing? |
Too hot!

You have to get out early. I was out at 7AM today. Felt "cool" but the humidity was at least 120% ;)

Got out even earlier today because of the temps. :o I was the first one in the parking area. Took the Cannondale and did my usual ride on the Withlacoochee Trail.
I'm sure glad I sold the Vision wheels that came on the Cannondale. They may have been carbon but the new wheels give a much nicer ride. |
Had an amazing time riding down and around Tampa on the "getaway".
We did the Tampa History Ride on Saturday the 2nd, and learned a great deal about a real estate mogul, named Davis, his island, homes, and disappearance. The pace was REALLY slow, but the views and entertainment value high. Thursday evening we decided to brave the heat and did a Terra Ceia ride, 12 miles. It was really cool that during the ride we got passed by a club ride that marks the path and how I found this ride in the first place. They has "SC" on their kit, but still not sure who they are. Super nice and courteous as they passed. Really fun to get to ride down there. |
Saturday:
I put some slicks on my front and rear. Hookworms by Maxxis on the rear and "Lo Gas" by China on the front (Beats "The Long March" I guess). Had to safetywire my rear most fender brace on after I installed some chain adjusters. (I might drill and tap the adjusters later for the fender brace) Went for a ride around the neighborhood, doodling in a spot with a bunch of haphazardly placed parking curbs. From rear axle to front axle is a span of 4 feet. After a while I found myself sliding out of the saddle. Couldn't get up to 15 mph this time around. I may have been a little tired before I started riding. Came back and found out that my new rear tire is an inch and a half taller than my original tire. My seat is as far back as it will go, so I dropped it an inch and tilted up a little. Raised my handle bar an inch and a half. Seems to be back to normal, I'll need a longer ride to find out. High side of a 7 mph average, uhhh. Did seem like I was covering more ground instead of bumping along. Sunday: The Hookworm is superior in surefootedness but the rolling resistance with a big guy is huge, plus the bike weighs more for some reason. Done an 11 mile round trip (As far as I've ever went and this is my 6th ride this year since way back last year). Took on a 2 foot wide bike path without a hint of breaking away from its center. Even though my bike lacks good mechanical trail. Still couldn't get up to 15 mph like I did coming from Tom Thumb with my Kenda rear tire. (But there is a slight decline there). All in all a good workout without traveling too far. |
Went out and did my lunchtime ride today. Temps are awesome today, and it felt really nice to be out. 6 miles in around 30 minutes.
I happened upon a nice little loop through a local neighborhood. My previous adventures in this area proved to be really hilly, so I hadn't been back. This turns out to be a nice climb broken up into sections and then a loop back around down the hill a touch less than half the distance. I am sure I will get bored with it soon enough, but finding a ride that isn't too much climbing right near my house is hard without taking a drive...which sort of defeats the purpose time wise. |
Got to the bike trail late this morning (7:15AM) but it didn't feel as hot as usual after last night's rain. :) Rode the Cannondale south from Hernando to Floral City and back. Stopped briefly at the bike shop. Rode 25.3 miles.

Nice^
Went out again today for my lunch ride. Did a bit over 7 miles with a bit better average. Great ride up to the point that I rode though a big wad of spearmint gum someone spit out on the road. All over the bike, all over me, wonderful sticky mess. Seven weeks straight of no less than 11 miles for the week. Not much, but far better than it was. Weight is moving in the right direction again. |
Another "nice" early morning ride. Rode from Hernando to the north end of the trail and back.
|
I got a late start today. Didn't get to the Hernando trailhead until 7:45AM. Rode the Cannondale to the north end and back. The humidity was low because of the rain we had last night. :)
|
Just got back in from another 6 mile spin, and did 7 on Friday. I like the new loop.
Sold our recumbent bikes yesterday. Got a fair asking price and now semi-hunting for a new set of wheels. |
I totally chickened out this afternoon. I could hear the thunder, the radar showed the rain coming from the direction I needed to ride (with a headwind), and I was okay with all of that. I completely chickened out on the temperature of 90 degrees, feels like 107. 107 is not an acceptable riding temperature.

It won't be long before we'll have to be out there and finished again before 9.30, or I'll melt. |
^ When we were down in Tampa a few weeks ago, I thought the temps themselves were fine, actually cooler than here in Atlanta. The issue is the unbearable sun. It's like a weight on your shoulders.

Went out to the garage today and the front tire on the Litespeed was flat. :o So grabbed the Cannondale and loaded everything in the car. Got to the trailhead around 7:15AM. Rode to the north end and back. My average speed has been getting faster so I guess that means I'm almost back to where I was before the last surgery. :)

Nice 7.5 mile ride with the wife today. Went to the shade at the PTC cart paths, made the temps really nice.
|
Tried a new loop out here in the sticks today. Been doing a bit of gravel along with the paved roads and I found a 3 mile one that connects to three of my favorite paved roads, and according to Strava was a nice steady climb at 2-3%, and leads right into Pickens Mtn Road which is a nice little paved climb between 3-8%. so hey a little taste of something new (like a mouth full of dragonfly) before I really get winded. .noo...it was all up and down with a couple sections that had to be well over 10% and super loose and super big gravel....did a bit of walking, went through over a liter of water just in that three miles. Said heck to Pickens Mtn today and rode directly to the closest water.
I'm a noob, but I'm learning. |
Welcome Pete. Do you have a Camelbak to carry plenty of water on these hot days? You can get them at bike shops or online.
