DC Metro Southeast Thread.

This is an exploratory thread to see where DC actually belongs. Whether it be northeast, or Southeast. So, events in the DC Metro, Northern Va area should be discussed here, at least as a topic opener. Whichever sticky generates the most traffic will be the forum for DC, whether that be NE or SE.

There is also a poll forthcoming on this sticky. I'll leave the poll running for 30 days.

I've been trying to get folks to discuss events in the DC metro area with some success in a thread I started here last summer entitled "K street traffic". You're welcome to combine your thread with mine if you think that makes sense.

I feel a connection with DC as a Northeast town, since it's part of Amtrak's Northeast Regional line (even though that route includes Virginia down to Virginia Beach, but IMO, the Northeast Corridor ends at DC ).

My logic for placing DC in the [b]Northeast[b] is this:

1. DC's land is located geographically in Maryland (i.e. if DC were to be retroceded, Maryland would be the natural recipient of its land.

2. Maryland is included in the Northeast forums.

Thus, DC belongs with the Northeast forum.

Leave it where it is. Or even better, just give it its own forum. That would simplify things considerably.

EDIT: I always figured it was in the Southeast forum since that's where I look. I would not look in the NE forum for DC. I still vote for just giving it its own forum. If DC cannot have voting rights, at least they should get their own forum.

I think Maryland, Delaware, DC, and Virginia should get their own Mid-Atlantic forum.

Either northeast or midatlantic forum. No way should be lumped in with the South. Last time I looked, there weren't too many monuments to the Confederacy around town.

I grew up in suburban sprawl DC (NoVa). It's not a Northeastern city, no matter what the dwellers want to believe.

Well I grew up in the South and currently live in NoVa and can tell you that DC is nothing like cities in the South no matter what you want to believe.

DC is tucked away in Maryland and should therefore be in the north east forum.

Bikes: Some bikes. Hell, they're all the same, ain't they?

Mid-Atlantic.

One of the car forums I'm on has a DC/MD/VA section, and it gets decent traffic. Another uses Mid-Atlantic, and it's more active.

Metro DC has as little to do with Atlanta as it does with Montpelier (the Vermont one). Yeah, you get some drawl when you get out in the sticks, but that's true of most of the Appalachians regardless of what state you're in. Both Ex Pres and Sentinel04 are correct in saying that it's neither Suhthrn' nor Nor'eastern.

This thread is generating more responses than the one in NE, even though Songfta posted a few questions in his response there directed at DC commuters, an obvious attempt to gain traffic. Honestly Rudi, Dupont to Georgetown is not a commute.

Baltimore is probably more of a typical southern city than DC.

While this thread has more replies, they are pretty evenly split, not surprisingly, given that DC sits on the border of what most of us see as North or South. I didn't think much about it when I started a thread about DC in this sub-forum, if it gets moved, that's OK with me. DC will be kicking ass wherever you put us. Recently named #3 US city for biking by Bicycling Magazine after Portland and Boulder! Take that East Coasters, nor and sou. Ha!

The only reason I saw this thread in SE is because of your K Street Traffic thread, which itself I would have never seen if I hadn't ventured from the NE section that I usually check for DC-area stuff.

Yeah, after rereading this thread, I see nobody has really said here that DC is in the Southeast US, beyond tulip's assumption and ex-pres's strong feeling that DC does not meet the measure of a Northeastern city. He doesn't suggest it's worthy of Southern Living status either...

I haven't cast a vote in the poll yet. I'm still undecided.

True enough, Rod - it's very short, but it is what it is, y'know? Still love the pix!

I'm not casting a vote because there isn't an option I would choose.

Since DC is not included in either (any) regional forum and I want to post a DC-specific post without having to double post, I asked Tom Stormcrowe to give DC a home. He wasn't excited about changing the present set-up but decided to do this poll. Thanks Tom. Given that getting a Mid-Atlantic forum doesn’t seem to be an option at this point, please vote before May 18th on either – to give DC a home.

OK, the results are tabulated, and DC is going to be placed in the NE Subforum.

NE:17 votes total
SE: 10 votes total
As Is: 5 votes total

This was the totals of both threads, in SE and NE.
