Georgia Rides to the Capitol

Who's doing this ride?
https://georgiaridestothecapitol.org/

I'm not sure if I'll be back from Florida by the 22nd. If I am I'll most likely be at the event -- unless it's raining.

From: Atlanta, GA. The city too busy to do anything well.

Bikes: Litespeed Palmares.

I'm still kind of considering it.

I did it two years (2006-2007) when I was working for the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign (now known at the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition). Can't remember if I've done it since -- maybe 2008.

It's a lot of fun if you have the day off. Thousands of cyclists from Decatur, Marietta, Roswell, south side of town (I think Epic Bikes gets a groups together), Gwinnett county, etc.

Did the last two years. I have the day off to go this year but my wife may have thrown a Monkey wrench in the works. I may have to take the day without pay.

I have been riding in with Bike Cobb starting at Lower Roswell rd in Marietta and meeting up with the Group lead my Roswell Mayor Jere Wood at the Hooch on Roswell rd.

Mayor Wood leads a ride back to Roswell at a 18-20mph avg pace. He dont fool around!

A friend of mine and I are doing it this year on our fixed/ss bikes. Not sure if we'll be able to keep up with the group, but it should be fun in any case.

The No Brakes crew has done it a few times. Shouldn't be a big deal keeping up on the ride in. There is usually a group riding on Unicycles in. Was a guy on a Panny Farthing one year as well.

No chance of Keeping up with Mayor Wood on the way back if thats what you are talking about LOL. The Bike Cobb crew usually comes back via Northside dr back roads in that area then over to Columns drive once they clear 285. Gets pretty hilly.

If you are starting in Roswell its a bit hilly till you get down to Glendridge area. Decatur ride in is pretty flat.

I've never seen a group of unicyclists. Do they form a paceline?

They are usualy spending too much time dodging skidding fixies and Mountain bikes on knobies. LOL
Actually they make some good time. They were really getting on the down hill grades. They stayed mid pack or better.

So far the weather looks pretty good. 2009 was BRUTALLY cold! It was in the 20's and Bike Cobb followed the river around to meet up with the Roswell groupe.

Long range forecast is Mid 40's for the start and mid 60's for the return and no rain (so far).

I wonder if Chick-fil-A will provide lunch (free) again like in past years. Not sure who pays for it.

I'll be there. Haven't done it since 2008, when I rode back you with Ron. I may have my 13 year old daughter with me.

Hi Brad. Haven't heard from you in a while. Good to see you're still with us.

Why does it take all this lobbying to get the Georgia legislature to act? All it took in Tennessee was a couple cyclists getting killed. Maybe Georgia needs a few martyrs for the cause?

Fact is "what is the point other then more fines when somebody gets hit?"

It is not going to change anything else and there is no enforcement possible with how little officers are on the streets. Its like the Texting law. It actually made it more dangerous because the same "the law doesn't apply to me" idiots are now trying to hide they are texting instead of holding the damn thing at the top of the steering wheel where they do have a little more view. Now they are holding it below the dash line. There were already "distracted driver" laws on the book and they were already not being Enforced.

Till we put some more constraints on getting and retaining a drivers license or more police on the road things are not going to improve.
Example:
How often does the DMV check to see if you still have knowledge of traffic laws like "where is a bicyclist suppose to ride"?.
Answer: only where you first get your license. There is no further testing to see if you still retain a lick of knowledge about other road users.

EDUCATE AND TESTING PEOPLE would do a lot more good. 20 questions when you renew would do us a lot more good then this law ever will.

I'll be there. I think I'll start in Stone Mountain with the BRAG group and ride with them to the official start in Decatur. I have done this a few times and always enjoy seeing the long line of bicyclists going down the roads. The ride in from Roswell the first year was hard on some folks as the motorcade kept the same steady pace up and down the hills.

I'll be there. Will cruise up to Decatur from Bouldercrest on my own unless I see anyone else along the way. Might still end up being a shorter ride than my commute. :-)

Me and a buddy are going. We both live in Decatur, but we're going to head out to Stone Mountain and do a few laps early in the morning before the ride so we'll be good and stinky.

Sick cat woke me up at 4am, sore throat when I got up, then got an appointment for sick cat and rushed him to the vet, and managed to get back home, throw on some bike clothes, down half a banana and ride my butt on over to East Lake Marta all full of dayquil. GORGEOUS day for this. I'd planned on making a day of riding around after the Capitol but felt like crap and just headed back home. Just happy I could make it and add my 2 wheels to the cause. Pictures? But of course!

Couldn't ask for a nicer day! Bike Cobb crew ended up logging 52 miles on the round trip. Hills coming up Northside drive then over to Powersferry up to Terrell Mill in Marietta kicked my butt at the end!

Yup! We took 29 all the way in. Here is our route: https://connect.garmin.com/activity/74535036

As we got closer to downtown, quite a few people started to yell out to us. "Go!", "You can do it!", "Tour de France, Tour de France!". It was quite funny.

Coming down Edgewood there was a guy that stepped out of a shop and asked everyone in a think southern accent, "How the hell did all y'all get off work?" ...it was subtle but hilarious.

Beautiful weather! I had a good ride in from Stone Mtn. after a too long drive. I always enjoy being part of such a huge crowd of bikes on the roads. Great to see so many old friends out.
