Got Hit By Logging Truck Today

Hi, All,

I'm a tourer and I was cycling down to Florida to surprise my parents for Christmas and today a logging truck hit me from the rear. I was on the shoulder, watching my mirror and saw him veer over, couldn't get out of the way in time. He hit me going around 50 mph. I was very lucky, could easily be dead, have a sore back and chest, and a hemotoma the size of a grapefruit on my thigh.

Here's the thing.

The truck hit me on the rear rack and tore off my highway side pannier and crushed the rack beyond use. I need a new rack and doubt I can find one in Vidalia, GA. Does anyone live in this area and have a rack for sale? (I can rig a backpack from Walmart to replace the damaged pannier.)

Best,

TJ

Man, that's terrible. Glad your [reasonably] OK. I'm nowhere near Vidalia, though. Good luck on the rest of your trip.

Did the driver stop, or did you get his plate?

I'm in Savannah, 80 miles away and have a pannier and possibly (can't promise) a rack.

Getting it to you over the weekend will be the trick.

I'll PM you my email and phone...

Bikes: Just a bunch of bikes.

Your not too far from Metter. Lots of cyclist in Metter, but Statesboro is probably the closest bike shop. Glad your relatively OK, it sounds like your lucky to be alive.

Thanks for the well wishes, replies, emails, and private messages. A very kind member from a local bike club drove me to Statesboro and I bought a rear rack and a front wheel. I tried to true the wrecked wheel but the rim never would straighten out.
