I did this in March this year, started in Joshua Tree, rode from town through the north entrance down to Cottonwood and then back again. When we hit Cottonwood my buddy said "that's the second hardest 56 miles you'll ride." "What's the first?" "The next 56"
It was during a wind advisory as well, so the big downhill wasn't that fun, and the return leg was mostly uphill into the wind. We did point to point, did not go east to the twentynine palms area
Note there is no water between north entrance and cottonwood, either bring what you need or have a SAG (my wife drove SAG, was a godsend about mile 80.....). The climb back from mile 73 to 90 or so just does not.... seem... to.... end

This is the route I was planning on. It eliminates some of the climbing in the second half and allows for a nice lunch at the halfway point. The leg to the lookout is optional.

Yeah, the benefit of that route is food on one end and some of the climbing is gone. But for some reason the climb into Cottonwood after the big downhill is harder than it looks (especially ater 125 miles )
Keys View is supposed to be great, a nice climb there too but we didn't do it.
The roads are for the most part pretty good except for the long climb up from Cottonwood. Drivers in March were very friendly even though the roads are pretty narrow.
Biking in and camping sounds pretty awesome too
ETA - hmmm, just looked again, looks like 29 palms is about the same elevation as Cottonwood (slightly higher), and you have to get back up to the turn off to Pinto Basin. I am not sure you are lopping off much climbing other than the top little bit on my elevation after the dip, around mile 85, that's the Pinto Basin turnoff more or less. Maybe 700 feet or so.
At any rate, it's an epic riding day
