where's a good place to buy some good bike shorts for a good price around the huntington beach area? I was gonna get the pearl izumi's for about $70 at REI but wanted to see if there's a least expensive price or brand elsewhhere. Thanks.

DaveSANYYZ 11-28-07 02:22 PM

Don't know of shops in your area; but I'm cheap and wouldn't buy bike shorts/jerseys at MSRP prices. They're often discounted quite heavily (except for the very expensive Assos brand :p).

You can try Performance Bike (www.performancebike.com). They should have local stores in your area and have sales very often.

I think people here also go to Surf City Cyclery; but I've never been there.

There'll be a Canari warehouse sale in SD area soon (deep discounts; there's a thread on it). A little less than 1 hr drive for you. REI also sells Canari stuff so you can gauge beforehand whether you want to drive there or not.

Hammer has their high quality Voler bibshorts on sale for $36/pair (plus shipping). Can't beat that for a nice pair of Voler bibs. Their non-bibs are on sale also.

Going steel. eBayed an 80's Columbus SLX frame made by ultra-obscure framebuilder Rob Stowe.

I'm going to transfer the parts off my Trek 2120 and sell the frame.

Nonononononononononoono! I am not a lemming. I like gears.

VanceMac 12-01-07 08:02 PM

Thomson's a lem-ming, Thomson's a lem-ming!

thomson 12-01-07 08:03 PM

<laughs> just wondering.

So, one recommendation, you probably have this covered, the Trek wheels come with an external cam skewer. I have had the worst luck with those holding the wheel with horizontal dropouts. Internal cam skewers will hold tighter but may be .00000001 gram heavier. Admittedly, I am a masher, using a larger gear than I am "supposed" to. A "proper" spinner probably won't have any issues.

DaveSANYYZ 12-01-07 08:04 PM

Congrats on your new bike!

Most things maybe but I have had a fixed gear for more than 20 years. My current one is only a few years old.

Hey,, why are we all walking off this cliff. Oh,oooopppsss

No problem. Open Pro/Ultegra wheels are going on this one. The skewers are internal cam.

Check out the Lemond Sarthe. I was a little surprised at the components you get for the price.

Hi,

Won these on ebay last night:

I "needed" some clinchers with carbon rims so that I can train on my Serotta without worrying about messing up my carbon brake pads. :D

You do? Cool. I never heard of them before seeing this frame. Apparently Rob Stowe worked for Serrotta before going off on his own - according to the interwebs that is. The decals on the Phase 3 Stowes look different than the ones on my frame so I'm not sure if is was made earlier or later than the examples I have seen. BTW, the interwebs also say that Stowe is from NY not Vermont. ;)

Hi,

Nice! :)

I met Rob when I was in college in the 1970s and I have a 1989 StoweTriad sitting in my garage. I keep on saying that I need to convert it to a fixie. ;)

OK, so this is important... I need to know if he was stoned when he made my frame.
