They were a bit over 1/2lb lighter than my Bontragers...that also includes new cassette weight!! the ultegra cassette weights less than the sram on the bontragers

My friend has been riding the M28 for 6 months now, and he's over 210lbs and rides like an animal. He bought em because he was bending the Bontragers every ride. Acyually I dont thing they have any fewer spokes then the stock wheels.

I dont think so....I imagine you would know pretty quick and stop!

Not that dramatic. The wheel will most likely become untrue. Now if the wheel breaks, well I hope you not decending a 40+ mph.

Thanks...maybe now I need to join the performance team. If I don't find a DuraAce wheelset at the swapmeet for $0.58, then I'll probably go and get a pair.

They're just so...I don't know...ho-hum? They look like the wheels that are on my '80's Schwinn. Don't new roadie wheels have to have SPINERGY or AMERICAN CLASSIC or EASTON emblazoned on the side? I thought that was the rule.

Great deal....

There's a good chance your wheel wouldn't collapse immediately, giving you time to stop safely. And 24/27 spokes isn't absurdly low nowadays. I have fewer spokes than that, set in pairs, at extremely high tensions. If one of my spokes ever gave way...

I picked up my package at the apartment office. I know Zipp carbon bar plugs are a bit silly, but hey, the brakes were on sale. And they should stand out nicely against white bar tape.

Now I just have to find someone to help me install all this stuff. Maybe I should try to attend the Sunday OC area ride and bug voltman or chimivee for help after lunch.

I'm a little late asking, but is it possible to actually install the cassette pieces incorrectly?

Not without a hammer or a chisel, no. Well, I guess one could install cogs in the wrong order... but anyone who might do that would have no business doing any of his/her own maintenance.

roadfix 10-17-06 03:42 PM

Anyone installing cogs in the wrong order should be caned in public.:p

voltman 10-17-06 03:45 PM

I don't mind a little flogging.

Everything seemed to have slid on well enough. But the teeth pattern looks funny now. I suppose if I didn't line up with the splines correctly, it wouldn't have closed so easily. Right?

It's possible SRAM and Shimano use different alignments of the teeth from cog to cog because of the way they ramp the gears during a shift. I don't have a SRAM cassette, so I can't confirm this.

There's a small spline that's significantly smaller than the others, so having a cog rotated relative to where it should be isn't a possibility. And the splines are spaced asymmetrically, so having the cog flipped the wrong way isn't a possibility.

jschen 10-17-06 03:48 PM

I guess one can place spacers in the wrong places, but it should be very obvious where the spacers go (ie between the thin cogs that don't have any other spacer already built in).

What's your cassette? It's a near mathmatical impossibility for all the splines on each cog to line up perfectly.

But, I hear what you're saying...my 11-23 cassette looks nice and neat because of the tighter ratio of teeth, but my 11-28 looks catywampus. They're both on right.

Oh...it was the R series...they are much lighter...and less spokes...

Shimano? If so, there's one large spline and a number of smaller ones, so you can't get them misaligned. But did you perhaps install one or more of the cogs backwards? Which way did you put the numbers stamped on the cogs? Also, if non-Dura-Ace Shimano, did you remember the thin washer behind the cassette?

voltman 10-17-06 03:59 PM

Shimano Ultegra, 12-25. They're all on right side up, and the lockring is secure.

Yeah the R series is what I got. Im easy on wheels though. The M's are for the bruisers. The spoke count is 20/24

For some reason, I'm still enamored with trying a standard double. I have a Truvativ Rouleur compact 50/36 right now. I was thinking of trying the Ultegra double and Dura-Ace BB, but $240ish for the heck of it isn't wise. I doubt I could just put the Shimano crank into the Truvativ GXP BB either. But then I saw the standard Rouleur double here. The 170mm version is only $110, but backordered. I wonder if the price will go up if they get them in stock, or if they'll get them in stock at all.

shouldn't you be out looking at mtn bikes about now???

It's funny. I don't like MTBs. If I were to get one, it should just be some basic, barebones thing. For some reason, I'm now looking at frames and build kits. And I still don't like MTBs.

There's a true roadie....:D

But can I be a true roadie if I've never used a standard double before?

Next.
