RAAM crew needed!
Come help me crew for Team Beat Cancer. We need five more crew members, minimum! June 12-23. Please PM me if you're interested.
Crew
While the riders may have the toughest athletic job on an event like this, crew have the toughest job overall. Once the ride gets rolling the safety of the rider, all logistics, nutrition, morale....everything is up to the crew. They not only have to endure sleep deprivation they also get to endure very cranky athletes the entire way.
I have no idea why people volunteer for this job but without them the ride just simply doesn't happen.
Crew members receive the following:
* A slow and scenic drive from Oceanside CA to Atlantic City NJ, all expenses paid (we'll give you food and a bed)
* A discount for product at Podium Cycles
* A substantial discount for a bike fit analysis from cycling legend John Howard
* There is a pretty fair bet that we'll have several tubes left over. We'll split these up between the crew along with any left over nutrition products.
* A once in a life time chance to expand your vocabulary as the cyclists start getting tired and cranky

We also are in need of the following items...
What we need!
Bike Racks We need two hitch mount bike racks. Each rack needs to hold at least three bikes in the upright position with the wheels resting in trays, no top tube clamping. The rack needs to fit a two-inch receiver hitch. The third rack we needed is being provided by the Las Vegas High Rollers Bicycle Club. It is going on the motor home and used as needed.
Water Bottles We have these now, thanks to Podium Cycles.
Energy Bars. Granola bars / Clif bars.
Bottled Water We have most of what we need, a couple cases for buffer would be good
Caffinated Energy Drinks This ride is not only a physical demand, it is also a battle of sleep deprivation. The riders and crew spend a lot of time awake. The crew actually has it worse, they have no down time. The riders can close their eyes and rest in between pulls on the bike. As the day turns to night, both crew and riders appreciate a little jolt now and then. Monster and Red Bull are preferred. None of these will be returned.
Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite or Mountain Dew The crews need something to drink more exciting than water. A couple of six packs each should do. None of these will be returned.
Money We need money for expenses. Gas, hotel bills, food, entry fees. It's expensive and only the riders share the burden. Riders often donate $500-2200 each to attend these sorts of events. Any money you can donate for expenses via the links on the left is appreciated. Any money left over goes straight to the charities. Of course, the Leukemia & Lymphoma society and the Breast Cancer Fund are our charities of choice and they can use all the money you care to donate. Thanks!
Two Walkie Talkies Minimum 12 mile range with ear buds, AA battery powered not rechargeable.
Pre-paid gas cards Two large vehicles, long slow miles, up and down a lot of wicked hills. It eats gas.
Ensure yes, the stuff you feed your Grandma. The 350 cal versions called Ensure Plus. We need LOTS of this!
V8...it's the climber's secret weapon against cramping!
Snacks Small bags of chips, pretzels, doritos etc.. For crew munchies.

Brandy,
Steve Born talked alot about his RAAM experiences at bike camp. If someone can, it would be a once in a lifetime experience. So is John Howard crewing as well?
Also I'm about 2 blocks from the route between stations 41-42, if you need something let me know.

I'm going to pass. I once drove from Flagstaff to Morristown, NJ in 36 hours in a freakin' Saturn. (platoon of 3, driving nonstop 'cept to gas/food/water ourselves)
Ne'er again, shall I undertake that misery.
