New Bar Tape Consult!

I can always count on you folks to help me make a snappy fashion statement.

My beloved Roubaix's bartape is starting to fray, and will need replacement sometime this summer. Should I replace it with the same black tape that gives it a stealth look, or go to some other color--gray, for example?

Here's a snapshot of my baby (updated since this was taken with a Garmin Edge 305):

White tape, white saddle. But I'm biased.

On one level I agree with both of you--my son back East bought an Allez with white bartape and saddle and it looks great--but I can't justify a new Toupe since the current one is only three months old!

Dilemmas, dilemmas.

Some day, you will want a new saddle. So you are just buying it early. That will let you change it up every few months... black/black... white/white... it's like a new bike a couple times per year!

Come on Bernie, spice it up a little. Pink and gray have always worked well together.

How about one side black, one side white? Or do some funky double wrap to get a sweet black/white spiral?

bern: Aside from the fashionista opinions offered herein, the most durable bartape I've ever used is that cheesy Carbon bartape from Performance. It's not really carbon, but looks like carbon, and lasts forever. I got some Fizik Bargel to go under it, and my bars are squishy and comfortable.

I just went with white going on about a month. It's a fun change after a lifetime of black.

Deda Elementi white bar tape. Starts out absurdly bright, so even when it's dirty, a modest bit of cleaning gets it back to a reasonably bright white. At least a reasonable white in bright sunshine... the dirt will show under cloudy conditions or under fluorescent lights.

No, though certainly in time for the Cool Breeze Century in August. Are you heading for Sierra Madre Tues. AM (tomorrow)? Excellent! I'll be leaving home about 8:15, and hope either to meet you on the way or at Beantown!

That sounds great--where can I get such tape (I'm afraid that if I ask at the LBS they'll treat me like even more of a dufuss than they do now)?

I knew I'd come to the right forum for advice!
