Route question for Long Beach/Wilmington Area Residents

I'm riding tomorrow from the SF Valley to Orange County. In the past I've taken PCH to Western to Anaheim and then toruned right on Magnolia to get to Ocean. Not a very scenic route, to say the least. I could take PCH further, but I've been told it's not that safe. Was wondering if there is a better way to get from PCH to Ocean in Long Beach. Ideas?
(Note I accidentally posted this in the Road forum first, so if a mod is reading can you please delete it from that forum?)

PCH and Anaheim are the only two choices as far as I know. There's the "Bicycling the Pacific Coast" book that suggests PCH, but there's maps from Adventure Cycling that use Anaheim. I prefer Anaheim.
