Thanks a lot for the idea, I've been looking for a place to climb like this! 39 used to be closed from just north of crystal lake due to a landslide, but that was 25 years ago, so I guess they finally, after many years, got around to clearing the slide. It was impassable then.
Where is 39 closed from now, or how far past the east/west fork junction is it closed? I'm not sure where the west fork gate is, I'd like to park somewhere near there...

Yes indeed. It is their backyard. I took this picture two years ago on East Fork Road.
It's not my first encounter with the furry guys up here, but fortunately, California bears seem to run away every time I've encounted them.

I've seen a snake the last 3 times there. Rattler(small), Garder(long, skinny, and fast), and California King(rattle snake hunters)very excited about seeing this one last week as I haven't seen one in the wild in almost 20 years. I'm bringing my camera for now on. Also on east fork i've seen a ran over rattle snake every time. It makes be think those things are everywhere out there. Then I see all those little kids playing around down by the river and think it's only a matter of time.

Tell me you were in a car, not stopped on your bike snapping a pic. I don't know if it'd scare me or not, but on the way up the mountain with that dude chasing me, I could pass Lance.

Has coddling tendencies.
For a nice wiki article about Crystal Lake and it's history, click here.
The article notes that there is drinking water to be found there: "A drinking fountain located on the walkway to the (amphitheater) facility provides water taken from an underground cistern fed by Soldier Creek." Can anyone confirm?

No, I was on the bike at the time. My wife and I were climbing East Fork on that day and the roadway was closed to traffic. I was approximately five hundred yards ahead of her when I reached the top. I had not noticed until I came to a stop that the bear was present. I was focused on my climbing and must have passed him alongside the road on my way up. My first thought was that my wife was quickly approaching farther down the road and totally unprepared for the encounter she was about to have with the furry creature.
Fortunately, there was a couple on a motorcycle parked at the gate when I arrived. I had him start his motor and the sound caught the bear's attention and frightened him off. He quickly jumped off the shoulder and scampered down the hillside. Once the roadway was clear, I could then descend down towards my wife who was completely unaware of the events which transpired. She would have never believed my story if I had not snapped the picture to prove it.

Just a thought on drinking from the spring...do those water purification tablets that you'd find in a survival kit work?

Iodine tablets? They work, but last resort.

hello
So when exactly did they shut the gates up in Crystal Lake? I remember driving all the up to the lake in 1987 or somewhere around that time...
