Hey, that's funny. I thought I remembered them in the other order though... flat first then almost crash. I didn't see anyone skid either but maybe it was behind me. I was literally on that guy's wheel when he hit the bump.
For identification, what is your kit and bike? Did you do the full route all the way to reino or did you shortcut at potrero? I'm going back this weekend, I'll be doing the easy street route.

i did the full route and i was the big guy in all black with some orange on the top of my jacket on a Kuota Kharma. i think the skidding and flat happened on lynn... but sounds like it was different incident than what happened to you. i was probably further back.
simi rides have been a lot of fun so far this year even with the cold temps!

umd, I recorded the ride if you are interested in watching parts of it (the first part up to the regroup) pm me and I'll send you the youtube link. Anyway, I was hanging around the back and I got crushed. I've done several group rides in socal, sdbc, como, foodpark, montrose, if como is a 7, this was a 13. I bonked at half a mile into mulholland hwy. Needless to say, the rest of the ride was miserable for me.

Nice video. I saw myself briefly during the turn onto the first climb. I'm guessing that you were in the group that took the Wendy Drive turn to shortcut Potrero slightly, and that was the front of the long group passing you as you nearned the top. I was in a group that caught you just around where the video ended. I think I remember telling you right before Lake Sherwood to not slow down so much when you pull off...

umd, I do remember that, you telling me not to slow down too much when pulling off, that's something I definitely need to work on. The thing is though, I've never done a paceline that fast. I want to do simi again at some point, but I definitely need to work on my fitness first.

hehe, yeah when it gets fast it gets tricky to remember all that stuff. I hope you took that as helpful advice at the time and not as "yelling." I always try to be gentle.
It's just that when you rotate off the front, everyone who is now behind you has to go at your pace. If you just stop pedaling then we all have to brake.

no worries, I took it as constructive criticism, if it's any excuse, I was a bit dehydrated and was starting to break from the pace so I wasn't thinking straight. I'm glad I did the ride though, it definitely toughened me up, especially for today at Long beach. Did you do that ride?

No, I'm further north, I don't usually go that far for rides. Today was a rest day, tomorrow is simi again, the hard route.

Ben, I don't think you would be challenging at the front but you should be fine on it. There are different routes and rolling regroups after the climbs. Do you think you could go 50% faster up latigo if it was only 1/5 the length? They only go really hard on the climbs for the most part.

How many different riding groups are there? How often are the regroups?

The info at the beginning of the thread is pretty good. Basically the ride forks into 3 lengths/difficulties. The easiest does a long gradual climb And heads directly to the regroup. The middle option does two climbs to the same regroup. The longer rise does some extra then loops around and does the climbs from the middle option. The climbs Rent super long or steep, they are only hard because people are going so fast.
The first major climb, the Norwegian grade is only about 1.25 miles at 6% average. I did the first half mile at about 16mph and then slowed down a bit and a bunch of people passed me. I averaged about 14.5 for the whole thing, took 5 min. There is a rolling regroup crossing through thousand oaks down olsen and Lynn roads. It's still a brisk pace but nobody is attacking and if you ge in with a chase group you can catch back onto the group.
Potrero is next and is a little longer and steeper. The fast guys will disappear, that's going to be a given. The challenge is getting across hidden valley at a decent clip to get to triunfo park for the only actual full stop regroup. If you do the middle option, apparently you have a lot of extra time because the long route takes maybe 10 minutes extra. If you do the long route and get dropped you may be done.
After that it rolls easy along agoura road to kanan/Cornell. Once on Cornell it picks up but stops at the sign to tuen onto mulholland so you get a breather. On mulholland it hauls ass to las virgenes. That's where I got my flat, and I was amazed to watch e ergone trickle in, and just how blown apart it got in the few minutes from cornell to there. It's supposed to be a rolling regroup after las virgenes to let people catch back up but many people were so far back I doubt they ever caught back on. Last week it was pretty mellow from there to "seven minute hill", and then they wait at the top of that for several minutes. From there it is downhill to Valley Circle where most people park and start from. Last week I parked closer to the start and had to ride across the [San Fernando] valley to my car by myself after the ride.

Ben, this is the first major climb, the "Norwegian Grade", from light to a little past the crest, so it includes some flatish sections at the bottom and top. I was having some recording dropout issues which is why there is a time difference and some absurdly low power/speed/cadence minimums. At my weight it worked out to about 5.4 W/kg. When we went up Latigo the other day I was at about 3.5 W/kg, for reference.
Code:
Norwegian Grade: Duration: 5:12 (5:16) Work: 109 kJ TSS: 15.2 (intensity factor 1.324) Norm Power: 358 VI: 1.02 Distance: 1.253 mi Elevation Gain: 367 ft Elevation Loss: 2 ft Grade: 5.5 % (365 ft) Min Max Avg Power: 13 661 350 watts Cadence: 31 115 94 rpm Speed: 3 27.8 14.4 mph Altitude: 436 802 599 ft Crank Torque: 20 775 316 lb-in
