I suffered big on SART this weekend. Started at Green River at 9:45. I made it to PCH, got some food and water and was headed back at 11:45. 10 miles inland and I was wishing I had my wife meet me in Huntington. After about three hours, I made it back to my car... barely. It couldn't have happened any sooner either. I was fresh out of water and was overheated. Despite drinking close to 10 bottles of water, when I got home I'd dropped about 10 pounds.

I played it smart. I stayed home, drank cold beer, and made pizza.

did a solo century Sunday down here in SD - it was HOT but staying close to the water helped. I need to eat salt next time - the V8 wasnt enough I think for electrolytes.

Curios, why not refill at Yorba Park (7 miles form GR) or even Featherly (2 miles from GR)?

Even Ray Charles could see the drinking fountain at Featherly.

Yesterday, read in the L.A. Times, about the lady who did a morning hike with a friend up in the Griffith Park area, in one of the canyons. She with her dog and a friend went out and one hour later the friend called it quits and went back. Unfortunately she and her dog kept going and she died. Her body was found on the path with the dog by her side.

That was Sally Menke, Quentin Tarantino's editor - she was found in a ravine in Bronson Canyon (about 100 yards away from houses on Green Oak Dr) with her dog (a black lab) sitting next to her body. Here's the updated story. Authorities suspect hyperthermia, but haven't released the cause of death yet...

Sad story but people need to be a little smarter in the heat. There were times when I did two trips up to the shack on GMR rather than hitting the village knowing I wasn't far from help if it go too hot. GMR/GRR is one of those places you don't want to get caught in the heat without water.

Couple years back Gina and I went walking hiking (?) around Claremont Hills Wilderness Park where I MTB. 5 mile loop. Near the end, after 3.5 miles we encountered some old guy, about 5'5 and nearly 300 lbs all in the tummy. He had two big fat Labs that looked like they were all on the same diet, big heavy dogs! One collapsed a section on the east side of the loop. He was nearly in tears thinking his dog was going to die. We walked by as a group of people were giving the dog water and being the bigger guy, like most times, I was asked to carry the dog down the mtn. I didn;t really want o bu the guy begged in front of a bunch of people so I pretty much couldn't say no.

They helped me prop the big old fat dog around my shoulders. I carried it down the steepest part of the trail, holy (censored) talk about a workout, it had to be atleast 100 lbs. Why couldn't they catch me early in the hike rather than at the end?"mad:

This guy took his dogs around the loop on a HOT day without ANY water! Be prepared people!

Opposite side of CHWP, the not so steep section.
