RIVER TRAILS OPEN?? Anyone been on the LARIO, Rio Hondo or SGRT lately?

I suspect the river trails are gated off in various locations, but I would like to make sure before loading the trike in the van and taking pot luck.

Anyone been riding them in the last few days of deluge?

SARTP is not locked down in NOC. I've been using it daily. You may need a snorkel at Orangewood Ave though.

I rode Rio Hondo in the rain on Saturday. Open all the way from the LARIO to Arcadia. (Even the path near the dam wasn't flooded. If it is by now - that's an easy detour.

SART - the tunnel under the 10 is flooded, as is the path that crosses the river on the way to the "four corners dam" (near the golf course.) I'd expect LARIO to be clear - as I don't remember any really low crossings. Just plan an out and back ride (as opposed to a loop) and you'll be fine.

I'm driving out to Orange County to ride tomorrow, myself.

Do you mean the San Gabriel River bike path? The SARTP does cross under I-10 in San Bernardino, but there is no dam near that undercrossing.

The SARTP is still submerged at Orangewood as of about an hour ago, but the rest of it in OC is clear enough to ride.

Tnx for the info. Worth a try. I could park at the Costco trailhead on MacArthur and head upstream to see the sights. Have always wondered what the golf course in the riverbed looked like when the river is up. Seemed to be a lot of water in up up by the Katella Xing yesterday PM.

There was a deluge going over toward Irvine yesterday afternoon. The confluence at Bill Barber Park might have been interesting. They still have not repaired the break in the weir dam at the mouth of San Diego Creek dating from Rain Week this January past. Another flood thru there and the end of the trail might be in the Back Bay.

I've been rummaging my memory for OC trails of some length that don't go up a creek or river. Shady Canyon loop in Irvine is one. Aliso Ck. has that section in the creekbed in Lake Forest - and more. Peters Canyon is probably mud in the underpasses. San Juan - they blew out another bit of wall on Trabuco Ck - after doing sheet piles on San Juan Ck just below.

That's the section by Angles Stadium, eh? Wonder what it looks like after a night of little rain. How fast does the river come down? From Google E. it looks like they have a settling ground on that section of river - all those dikes for a maze to pond the water. Always wondered why a good flood didn't take them out.

How are things up towards Yorba Park. Understand they paved a section below there.

I'm planning to riding an out'n'back on SARTP starting at the coast and heading as far up as I care. I'll be on my fully-fendered white/red Allez. So say hi if you see me.

Sounds like a plan. Fenders are good. (Trailbear hates mud covered fur.) CritE noted the Orangewood underpass may be under. Probably a lot of mud if it was under water.

Any good trailhead on the coast?

We have used the little park with RR and free parking about a block into Newport. Drove into the almost empty beach parking lot and they wanted $15. In their dreams!
LeBard and Fairview Parks did not work too well. Victoria Vista looks like it might do OK. Down hill and onto the trail at Victoria. Costco on MacArthur seems to have the best facilities.

They typically do, then the dozers go back and build new ones. They are made of sand so floods will take them out.

The SGRT is completely flooded just north of the dam at four corners. Take alternate routes...

I meant SGRT in my earlier post. As for Orange County, I'm riding Santiago Canyon.

I rode SART between Weir Canyon and the 22 freeway, and it was passable. As previously noted, it is still flooded at Orangewood, but riders are redirected to the street. I just waited for a break in the traffic and rode directly across. Sorry, no pictures, but what I saw in various places was comparable to the pics of SGRT posted above.

Neat pix. How did you do that collage? It gets the job done. Looks like I better give the SGRT a week or so.

We headed for Costco. Costco was full. Long lines for gas, etc. Shined that and rode from home. I plan to be there tomorrow at 0800 for gas, parking and a trailhead, then shopping. Expect a zoo.

San Diego Creek Trail - the rains have taken another chunk out of the bank at the Jamboree bridge. The next good storm will probably cut the trail.

In Jan. 2010 the weir was breached. No repairs done to date. Now more is gone and there are about 2' left between trail and drop off.

Headed up the Bonita Creek trail. OK going up. Far side - lots of tree debris, down limbs along side trail.

Went on the Rio Hondo/SGRT today. The Rio Hondo from Arcadia(Live Oak Entrance) was completely blocked near the dam(When the trail dips down around the lake). Just take the alternate entrance from Peck Rd. Park.
The dam at four corners was flooded, but the water was only a couple inches deep and me and my friends was able to ride across on our road bikes/mountain bikes. On the way back around 1:30, the water had depleted and there was no water at four corners, but the Arcadia Rio Hondo entrance was still blocked.

Just rode from the Mines ave entrance in West Whittier to Liberty Park for a quick 20 mile spin with the wife. The trail is fine, although, there is some minor debris along the way. Not a big deal. Also, be careful with the underpasses. Some mud run-off that might catch someone off-guard. Still, not a big deal. There were other riders headed further south. It did not appear that they encountered any more problems. Watch for wet, shady areas with wet leaves...

left my house in Downey about 11:25am, went up the Rio Hondo and over Whittier Narrows Dam. Check dam was open as was WND. Took the trail into the flood basin behind the dam which had water, had to carry my bike to Lincoln Ave(cyclocross about 40 feet) to continue to SGR via Siphon road. Glided through mud and sand just behind where the above pictures were taken. Went to Santa Fe dam, had to go around standing water under the 60 freeway into the riverbed which was sand and mud. Went to the top of SFD to see water behind the dam. Turned around and went home. Had been OTB for 16 days. Felt good. Sunny in the low 60's.
