Plans for Amgen ToC

So what are people doing? I plan on attending stage 8 and hopefully stage 7.

calamarichris 05-13-11 03:29 PM

I definitely want to be on the switchbacks up to the Baldy ski lifts! Those were harrrd on l'Etape.

(I was not smiling on the final four miles, going up those switchbacks.)

psalm 05-13-11 05:13 PM

Plan is to drive out to the start of stage 7. Then drive home, get on my stead and ride out to one of the road sections. I'm not sure exactly where yet, but I live close enough that I can probably watch a couple of sections.

after the forum gmr ride last fall, i was gonna go out and camp somewhere past the village to watch the baldy stage. but given how epic the 3 stages of the giro are that weekend, i think i'm gonna stay home and watch streams of both.

KiddSisko 05-14-11 11:18 AM

Stage 7: Ride up GMR early morning, ride to the finish, bask in the glory of my achievement, then find a spot along the switchbacks and wait. I'll be carrying a backpack with a change of shoes, food and layers. Forecast is suggesting a nice day, but that's a distant forecast.

Heading to Claremont for the start. Might head up the mountains to watch some more too

FlatSix911 05-14-11 09:36 PM

I will be at the start of Stage 2 - Squaw Valley to Sacramento ... :thumb:

Weather update ... Snow is forecast for the Tahoe Basin tomorrow :twitchy:

Stage 1 should be very interesting ... Update: Race Cancelled :notamused:

Mr. Beanz 05-15-11 04:04 AM

I'll forget about it and miss the whole thing as usual.:D

Nachoman 05-15-11 08:10 AM

I'm heading up to Santa Barbara with some old high school friends. We'll pedal the local mountains there for a few days and watch the time trials in Solvang.

Yen 05-15-11 03:20 PM

I'll be one of the volunteers (probably ride marshal) at Stage 7 in Claremont. I hope to be able to drive to GMR/GRR before they arrive there, because Baldy Rd. will be closed to non-essential vehicles before and during the ride.l

calamarichris 05-16-11 09:25 AM

Anyone know what time Baldy Road closes?

stugi79 05-16-11 09:28 AM

Spectators Guide Here with closures and viewing spots

calamarichris 05-16-11 10:27 AM

Awesome, thanks Stugi!
Anyone up for pizza & brew afterward?

mtnmn 05-16-11 01:53 PM

So I'd really like to ride up and ride up with peope or peoples-:D

pick a spot on GRR, the race will be by twice here or above the village where the mountain race will be happening

Oh just a thought, a spot where there is mobile reception?

Pizza and brew, I'm down with that too, after the ride back down at least, if I recall there is a Pizza place at the Lone Hills Center, one of the two places that I usually start.

I would be up for that and some Pizza and brew too. Anyone else?

Anything worth while on SG canyon road? the spectators guide didn't even mention it.

Lesper4 05-16-11 04:55 PM

No reception in baldy area what so ever.

Only rode SG Cyn once, but seems less optimal because race direction is GMR to E. Fork to SG that's down hill from GRR, peleton in flight through there and Sierra Madre town romp back to GMR.

I want to get up there somewhere on the mountain. I can forget about the switchbacks because I will have my wife and two small little ones with me. We went to Big Bear last year and staked out along the route, made a day out of it with a picnic. The kids are looking forward to it and I hope the ToC continues so we can make a tradition out of it.

Big, I hope Baldy finishes will become part of the ToC expectation and lore, too. Does your wife cycle? If so, as the children get bigger you'll have to get them those 3rd wheel setups. What an exciting proposition, traditions rock.

Anyway, for viewing with the family there are some choice locations along GRR with open line of sight for seeing approach and down the road and the route travel GRR twice. Also the race view guide suggests GRR/GMR then as short walk down GMR for the KOM.

So several posts, plan to be on the mountain-

Anybody in for a meet and ride up, ride back for Pizza after?

Here are 3 poss. starts for a GMR climb, I've used two: the lone hills center (pizza place there) and at equestrian center at the base of the climb and parked in the tract across the street, but wonder if it might be posted closed being adjacent to the course.

Looked at the map, there's a school just west and south off N. Loraine- Sellers School.

Start time depends on destination, the switchbacks of the final ascent or GRR?
