GMR 11/26...JMX, Bong, Hillbasher, Gina and the Wild Animal.

A super nice day on GMR. Perfect weather for the climb. Gina climbed to the shack while Hillbasher and I hit Peacock Saddle. Had to work off some of the turkey and desserts ha ha! Right away we ran into JMX of the SoCal forums. Dude is crazy! Training for a double he was riding for time. I forget the target number of hours but it was crazy too. He had already gone to the village once and was heading back a second time, WOW! Later I ended up driving up GMR and saw the guy going up a third time, what an animal. I believe he said about 10,000 ft of climbing by the end of his ride.

Also ran across Glendora Mountain Road blogger and Bill. GMR headed back up with us for a bit, another climb repeater ha ha! She rode with us for a bit then headed back down. So the three of us continued on up with Gina doing very well. Heck, she was complaining cause we stopped too much ha ha!

Once HB and I returned from the saddle, we took a picture break at the landing above the shack (Monroe). Along comes Bing and his buddies Jose and I don't remember the other guy's name, sorry. More crazy guys, did GMR, then Crystal lake, back up to GMR then to Bonelli their start point. 82 miles, nearly 10,000 ft of climbing.

Well we started down a couple minutes after Bong, Jose, and buddy. Just after Newman's, we approach a turn and bad news, Jose is laid out in the middle of the road. He's very still and the guys are over him offering assistance. Jose is pretty beat up so we stop approaching traffic and riders. Wouldn't you know, a quiet day but when something happens, every body and their grandmothers show up on motorcycles, hot rods, and bicycles.

The guys startd from Bonelli so their vehicles are not within reach. The guys manage to get Jose up and to the side of the road. Pretty nice of the Harley riders to offer help and cell phones, thanks people! So the guys ask if I can get my truck to give Jose and his bike a ride back to Bonelli to meet them. Sure! We head down, Gina waits at the equestrian center while I drive back up, then deliver Jose to Bonelli park to wait for his friends.

Driving back, Jose didn't look too good. Plenty of scrapes on his arms and hands and can't move his shoulder. Didn't seem to be a clavicle, maybe a separated shoulder? We talked on the return and he seemed to be in his right mind so that was a good sign. The guys were training for the Tour De Francis next weekend. I don't think Jose will be on the ride.

But other than that, a beautiful day. From the mountain, you could see the sun's reflection on the ocean. The picture doesn't do the sight justice!

Whoa, jeez that sucks. So this was just a minute or two after I headed down? I wonder what happened. Tire blowout? Gravel on the road? I never saw you headed back up or back down as I rode back up, I had no idea something had happened.

I asked Jose if he had crashed due to a flat maybe? He said no, his tires were fine. But he was out of it pretty much on the way back. When I dropped him off at his vehicle, I felt his front tire and it was semi flat. I'm betting it caused the crash.

When I dropped him off I told him he shouldn't drive and that he should have his friends take him home (Fullerton). He said he could drive, I said I don't thinks so, so I'm hoping his buds drove him home. When he got out of my truck, he almost fell down. I sort of held him up but he said it was just a cramp.

Yeah, I rode down to the dirt lot, quick switch then headed back up in the truck. I saw you heading up at about mile 1 or 2 on the mountain. I waved as we drove by but you were watching other vehicles heading your direction.

I took some shots from my ride yesterday too. Ended up 115miles w/14,150ft of climbing. Not a single mile of flat road was used, aside from the few spots here and there along GRR. I rode until about 6pm under the stars. The creepy noises from the bushes on both sides of the road kept me motivated to keep moving.

What an impressive day of riding. The few times I saw you, you didn't look anymore tired than if you had just started. Don't think I have the legs (of the knees) for anywhere near that kind of climbing. Did it once, maybe 25 years back, and it knocked me out for days. Congrats on the great day you had. How much climbing in the double you are training for?

Yeah, thanks, I felt great all day. I lucked out and got my nutrition, water, and pace perfect for that ride. Felt great this morning and even went for a jog on the SART pushing the kid around in a jogger for a couple hours.

The double is out in fantastic death valley (the best place to ride a bike!), and half of that is mostly flat. There's about 9000ft of climbing total. If you've not been out there for an Adventure Corps ride I highly recommend it. They've got easy stuff and hard stuff and the scenery is hard to beat.

Anyway, nice meeting you yesterday. I'm not sure you said a single word the whole time....quiet one are ya?

Everyone seems quiet when next to Beanz.

It's the Mayor's halo effect.

As is usual for me, 9 out 10 times I am up on GMR I have just gotten off work. I go in at midnight and get off at 9 AM or so. Then if I feel like I have even the slightest amount of energy left over, it's on the bike. Saturday I was going to sleep after work but Fred sent a txt saying he and Gina were going out for breakfast and doing GMR after and if I was interested, to meet them at the bottom around 10:30 AM or so. How could I pass that up? I'll tell you how. If I had had one beer in the fridge when I got home, I would have told Fred I was too busy to ride. But Noooooo. No beer, so off on the bike it was. Once I got up to the dam at the bottom, was glad I was there. Perfect day for riding up there. Once again, good luck on the double.

I'll be honest. I almost fell asleep when we were sitting on the wall at the top when we got back from Peacock Saddle. Working all night, riding all day, makes for a long day. Now that you are back on the job, I think it is your turn to ride after working all day. Yaaaaaaaa When we doing a night ride up GMR?

I actually ride better after a day of work, body is loose, wide awake.

After a graveyard shift, I was sleepy. After a swingshift, sleep at 3 am, up at 9 for a ride, I was stiff and hard to get started.

Heck, if I had better lights, GMR night rides would be no problem. I used to go mtb'ing 2 -3 times a week after work working days and daylight savings time. Working at night is much tougher than riding after a "DAY" of work.
