First Tandem Ride

My wife and I went on our first ride yesterday, 63 miles on a benefit ride for our local community bike shop Savory Cycle 2015Savory Cycle 2015 Had a great time; no falls and no fights! That's us on the right with our tandem riding friends (there were five tandems total on the ride)

First stop, the Stallion Barn at Welcome to Airdrie Stud, a leading Thoroughbred farm in central Kentucky.

Lunch at Woodford Reserve - Age verification

Scenes from the road.

Dinner at Holly Hill Inn - Home

We bought a pristine 08 Trek T1000. I'll be upgrading some of the components (adding a rear drum or disc-the stock brakes border on dangerous, new FD and crankset) to make the bike more rideable. Hope to make a tandem rally sometime soon!

Congratulations. That's an impressive distance for your first tandem ride. It sounds like you enjoyed excellent teamwork right off.

Very cool.

There's a local tandem club, but for various reasons, I've never been involved with it.

However, I have been on rides where there three tandems, that is pretty cool. Actually, it was three tandems and a recumbent single bike, come to think of it, no "normal" bikes in the bunch.

+1! Very well done for a first outing. I hope that you thoroughly enjoyed yourselves and will continue to ride 2-gether. And I love your jerseys.

Very nice! Beautiful country. Love the jerseys.

Those are cantilever brakes, right? Does anyone know if Avid V-brakes will fit on the same posts? We have Avids with Travel Agents on our used CoMo, which have been fine, though 10% descents are pushing it. For loaded touring in unfamiliar terrain, we built a spare rear wheel with an Arai drum brake. We didn't go the disc route because our frame doesn't support discs and we didn't want to spend for a frame re-work.

Yes, they will.

Cantis are harder to set up than V-brakes, but when set up properly, work just as well.

That said, I put Avid SD5 V-brakes on our T50, replacing Deore XT cantis. I have Deore XT cantis on one of my commuters.

Well then, that's a low-cost suggestion for the OP. Our Avid Single Digit 7 V-brakes work very well and are easy to adjust. Our team has weighed between 275-295. We now use only Swisstop GHP2 pads. Maybe they'd work with cantis as well.

Been riding as a tandem duo since 1975 (40 years) and covered over 240,000 miles TWOgether.
t'Is a whole different lifestyle to enjoy! At ages 82/80 we may not be as fast or go as far as we used to, but we're still out there!
Pedal on!
