Shipping a tandem to SE Asia

Anyone have any experience doing it?

I really want a tandem as i think they would suit both of us, but they are ridiculously bulky so how much are we likely talking, whether it be by air or sea, from the UK or US to Cambodia?

If i bought a bike in the west on Ebay etc, is there places i could send it or have it picked up and packed and shipped safely?

Cheers

Normally, I'd recommend BikeFlights. They don't serve Cambodia, however.

My UPS account is quoting 2700 USD for a full size tandem box, or 1700 USD for a coupled tandem in 2 cases. That's shipping from New Hampshire, USA to Phnom Penh, Cambodia with $2000 worth of insurance per box.

You might be money ahead by finding a local dealer and buying at your destination.

I was speaking with a factory rep fro co-motion a couple of years ago and he said they shipped very few tandems overseas because the shipping is so high it is not worth it.

If you can travel with it, BA might still let you take it for free. We took our Trek some years ago from Tampa to Gatwick, packed in 1.5 bike cartons and they didn’t charge. Don’t tell them beforehand it’s a tandem; just roll up at check-in and say it’s a bike! They didn’t even ask us, and simply told the porter to take it to oversized baggage. Their policy then was that a bike is sporting goods and is allowed in addition to your regular luggage.
Good luck!

It can be advantageous to have a local mechanic who is somewhat familiar with tandems, and that would make it more desirable to buy local if possible.
A lot of ebay sellers are reluctant to ship overseas due to scams associated with that in the past.
