27 1/4 inches history roller

Dear all,

New to your forum. I have been cycling the last 5 years with a now 22 yr old tandem slightly modified.
The rear rim is a Weiman concave 27 1/4 (original) with drum brake.

The back stem do not allow space for a much bigger tire.

If I choose a smaller rim I lose the use of my cantilver brake. The drum brake does help out in descents.

The wheel is fine. I just cannot find the right type of tires for a 450 lb team outfit (team, the bike and accessories). Was using Turbo Armaldio from Specialized at 140 Lbs pressure until local stores raned out of them. Any place to find them still?

My front wheel is now a 700 cc with a wider tire. The change was made possible following a change of fork in order to install hydraulic brakes.

What do you recommend?

Old faithful (name rebaptized for the tandem after reaching Newfoundland last year).

Dear Old faithful,

Your saddle may have reached the end of the continent. It may also have reached the end of its supply cycle for all to know.

Ever think you could replace the model with a more recent one?

The Panaracer Pasela is a nice tire. The widest I see in 27" is 1-1/4", or about 32mm.

Here is the Tourguard version of that tire:

Dear Greg,

Relief! I have went to the link but the tire proposed is limited to 95 lbs. How will this handle in comparaison with the Turbo from Specialized at 140 lbs?

Dear Alberta dog,

My tandem has endured enough dog attacks over the years I will not quit on him because of age. He has proven his value and made the trip for all to enjoy!

I view tandemists as conservative people. Changing a saddle just to change may not be appropriate for some. When the frame will die out on me, I will let him go.

Regardless of your weight, most 27 - inch tires will do the trick. A wider tire will give a bit cushier ride for stoker; at 95 lb pressure a tire will ride less harsh than using 140 lbs of air.
27 inch tires do not offer as a great a selection as 700c, but they can still be found in some big bike shops and certainly on the internet and in catalogs (Performance, etc).
Maxxis, IRC, Panaracer and Pyramid all offer 27x?? tires. Some hardware and discount stores (Kmart, etc) sometimes stock some kind of 27 inch tires too.
