Disk brake choice

For our futur new tandem https://enfinletandem.blogspot.com/ whe want principals brakes on rims, Magura HS33, for the captain and second disk brake on the rear wheel for the stocker. The disk brake for help, long downhill for example; What about Hope brake? Whe want endurance and sweet attack. Hope mini? Hope M4? Hope M6?
Thanks for ours answers et sorry for my language.

If you wish to have an extra brake as a 'cruise control' for long downhills, do not choose a disc brake. Instead, use the Arai drum brake. This brake is especially made for tandem use. It can withstand prolonged use in a downhill. The brake fluid in disc brakes will get to a boil if you use them continously and discs are likely to bend.

No doubt, you already know the following french sites on tandems?
Sans dout, vous connaissez déjà les sites francaises suivantes sur les tandems?

Will agree that for road use and as a drag brake- a hydraulic disc brake is not suitable. However if you are talking about a suitable disc brake for a Tandem for offroad use (VTT) then I use Hope Mono M4's. These brakes are exeptional for my use, and cannot fault them.It is also recommended for Tandem use so another problem as to whether they are good enough is dealt with. The Hope mini's are mainly for solo bikes and the Mono M6 is another recommended for tandem use. I use the harder Syntered pads and braking effect and life of these pads is good. Mind you- I also use 200mm discs aswell so this may have something to do with the effectiveness of my set up

Whe know Aria drum brake, but whe want Disque brake, drum can "boil" also. Y remeber y become red on our old Lejeune tandem. My question is about size of the disk, for a good dissipation of the heat. Whe use in alternation rims brakes and disk brake in long donwhill.
Y know french tandem sites, but whe want another opinion because our practice is not a standard practice. English language community seems largest.
Thank's for your french translate.

If you really want a disc brake then I can recommend the Hope Mono M4's with the largest disc possible which I believe is 200mm. I would also recommend the Syntered pads- they are harder for longer life and do not fade when hot. I would also recommend the DOT 5.1 brake fluid. as this has less tendency to attract moisture and hence boil. It will still get very hot check the brake lines, or even change to the steel braided lines if you think you have a problem.

I have not used the Mono M6 but this has a larger caliper area which will help with heat dispersal and also has a larger pad area.

our choice for Mono M4, certainly. for large disk, 200mm, and for the quality of building. It's beautiful manufacture.
Whe dont'want mechanical. Braking result is not at the same level than hydro disk; Our tandem use rear mechanical disk, an hold first model from hope, it's a good speed reducer but a bad brake.
Metal hoses connections (?) take part in hot dissipation?

Just curious: what is your practice that you were able to get an Arai brake to "boil"?

Thank you for this answer. The Lejeune obviously had a small drum brake. The Arai is much bigger and better. We have cycle camped for 13 years with 2 hydraulic rim brakes. These are sufficient for this purpose if you let the bike gain speed on downhills. If you want to permanently limit the top speed, the Arai is the best choice. Realise this: disc brakes are very powerful, but more complicated than rim brakes - especially in comparison to Magura's HS-33 rim brakes. On disc brakes, there's more to go wrong. If you prefer simplicity, go for the HS-33s.

That's our choice. HS33 for simplicity and performance. And whe find adaptables Vbrakes everywhere around the world. And the disk brake for helping if needed.
Bicycle must be simple for me, that's her beauty
(My english is simple, but that's not his beauty....)

Have Hope Mono M4 on our road/touring tandem as an upgrade to the standard mechanical disk. Works great with 1000 miles around the Peak District in England and in the Pyrenees. We do tend to descend fast, but with a level of confidence, given the 2 V-brakes and Hope disk.
