Derailleur hanger failure?
Going on a two week self supported tour over the lake region of Northern Patagonia (Bariloche-Puerto Montt-Esquel, about 400 k of backcountry gravel roads. We leave on Monday, promise to report when we get back.
Took a ride today with my MTB cycling buddies and they believe I should be taking a spare derailleur hanger, which I don't have.
First question, is the hanger on a Co-Motion Mocha specific to Co-Motion or are there some standard designs? Should I even bother looking for one?
Second question, since I don't think I will find the part before I leave, how many of you have seen it fail? I suppose it would take a very specific fall or hitting a big stone, so I guess it is an MTB problem more than a road bike problem.

In our thousands of tandeming miles we've never experienced a der. hanger failure, or seen one on another tandem.
Having said that . . .
Have a great tour in Patagonia!

Don'tllay it over on the derailleur side, and have the limit screws adjusted correctly and you're good.
Mountain bike riding you're more prone to crashes and branches can gum up the works without a crash.
Replaceable derailleur hangers are a good idea on a road bike on the off chance you wreck and break the hanger.
But if your not racing crits, its very unlikely you're going to need a new hanger.
And if you do happen to break yours, you just have to single speed home.

If you're at all nervous about it, pick up the phone today and call CoMotion. I'm sure they'll be able to send you one right away. BTW, I did run across someone who cracked not a der. hanger, but a rear dropout on a steel frame. Granted, the frame was 20 years old, but they sent it back to the manufacturer who repaired and repainted for free.

In about five years we have replaced the RD hanger twice. Once because of a drop and once because of a crash. I wouldn't worry about it, just be careful.

My 06 Mocha is steel and the DR is part of the drop out and can't be replaced since steel can be straightened without breaking. Replaceable DRs are usually found on Al bikes because they can break when straightened.

Thanks, Tandem Forum rocks!
Indeed, now that I looked at it, the hanger is not a separate part.

Don't know Comotion models at all but that is still a useful site for replacement hangers for many singles and tandems. They have one for my Santana as well as a friend of mines Trek Mt. bike.

We have a Co-motion Speedster, which is a steel frame and so, like almost all steel frames, doesn't have a replaceable derailleur hanger due to the possibility of bending it back into decent alignment even if knocked out of position. However, this is the co-pilot version, with S&S couplers, and so I really wish the hanger were replaceable. When I break the bike down to put it in the suitcases, the derailleur hanger rests dangerously closely to the edge of the case. I have to be careful to make sure that it won't get caught by the top of the case when I close it. I've since learned that it is therefore safer to put the drive side facing down, but I'm still not happy that it just sticks out there unsupported, and I worry what less careful security guys at the airport might be able to do to when opening our case to inspect it.
It would therefore be much better if Co-motion could at least put a replaceable hanger on their co-pilot models. I could then remove the hanger and rear derailleur as a unit, and not have to worry about the danger of the hanger getting bent.
