Flight Deck Battery

Our Santana gets ridden once a week at most. Yesterday morning I began to prep the bike and found, once again, that the Flight Deck computer's screen

was blank.

This will make the third time in two months that I have had to replace the 2032 battery.

This has just begun to happen -- for many years the battery lasted for a year or more.

I've searched the forum but can find no mention of this problem.

Any suggestions?

Take it off the base next time you store the bike. There could be a short in the wires or it may have been parked with a sensor near a magnet.

My oldest Flight Deck (11 years old) does the same thing if I do not turn the computer off at the end of the ride. The newer Flight Decks turn off automatically. I occasionally forget to turn the old Flight Deck off and the batter goes down if a few days.

Huh? How do you turn it off? Are you using it in the mode where it doesn't stop the timer when the bike stops?

Lifted from the manual.....

When the computer is left without
receiving any signal or any button
activation the unit will be in a
“sleep” state and only the clock will
appear on the display.
The normal display will return as
soon as a signal is received or a
button has been pressed.

Yes, that's why I am confused by the post saying "that's what happens to mine if I don't turn it off". There's no action to take to turn it off.

After installing a new battery and having just finished "setup", while I was writing post#5....

My oldest Flight Deck, 2001 model, turns off with the left button on the shifter. I have a 2003 and 2006 Flight Decks and they turn off automatically or can be turned off manually with the left button and on the correct screen.

Bikes: Mine: Paul Taylor Custom 66cm, Rivendell custom 68cm, '75 Eisentraut Touring 69cm, 68cm track frame of indeterminate origin, '92 Cannondale M500. Ours: '93 Burley Duet tandem XL. Hers: L Mercier Sora thingy

Sort of off topic, do you guys like these flight deck computers when they're working properly? I would really like to have one on my tandem to show what gear I am in. I can't rely on my stoker to tell me, she's just too inexperienced riding bikes. The times she has tried to look, she threw us off balance and I don't really care to repeat that experience. And of course I am way more accustomed to riding singles where I just look down if there's any question about what gear I am in.

My bike came with a flight deck but I had to remove it. I kept hitting a button and changing screens, very annoying. Here is a less expensive solution, although I do not use one.

I've never had problems with the Flight Deck working properly, and I like it. On the tandem we have Tiagra with the built-in gear indication, and that is nice too. I would think the gear indicators linked above by apage4u would be just as good a solution.

I've had a flight deck on our tandem since 2007 and really like it. Would not want to be without it.

I have one of these and a FD indicator installed on our Speedster and love them. Easy to install and no batteries needed!
