Has anyone heard if Picnic Lane is okay in Memorial Park in the last day or two? May try to ride there tomorrow.
|
I rode 30 miles at White oak Bayou yesterday. Most of it is okay but there are some places where there is a lost of sand on the concrete and you have to be a little careful. I also noticed that when I got home and had my glasses on, I saw a lot of sand on the front derailleur. Had to clean the bike.

The Picnic loop is open. I rode laps there on Sep 2nd afternoon.

so we had 40.5" of water in the first floor/garage of the house for roughly two weeks. entire downstairs is a total loss.
all 5 of the bikes were in the garage the whole time. They were standing up on their back wheels with the front wheels on a wall hook, so they were submerged in standing water up to about over the seats (maybe <1/2 of the back of the frame?). all the cassettes and chains are pure rust. the frames are hopefully salvageable - haven't had a chance to take any of them to a shop because we also lost our only car. we're borrowing a clunker jeep wrangler from a co-worker but there's no room for bikes. Lost all my bike tools, spare parts, etc. my park tool work stand was ok, just had to drain it out lol. gonna be a while before we're back rolling. hoping for the best, and that the frames are ok. it sucks not having a car, but it sucks even more not having my bikes as an alternate. and it sucks even more not having a house. Hope y'all did ok. anyone interested in seeing all my pics of from the first drops of Harvey to current house tear out status can check them out here in my flickr album:https://www.flickr.com/photos/rattle...57685839213560 |
That's horrible, SciGuy! I hope insurance gets you some fancy new bikes at least.

(and we didn't have flood insurance because we aren't on a flood plain) |

homeowners insurance doesn't cover flood waters. so, short answer is: no, they won't.

If you want, I can help you get your bikes to a shop. Maybe they are not all lost. |

Hi Sciguy,
We met a few years ago at Bike for Mike when you still had your Surly. I am so sorry for the difficulties you're going through. I have extra bikes that you can borrow. My 51cm CAAD9 (ridden last 3 ms150) or Medium size old school MTB 1990 ish I am also a DIYer if you need free labor. I guess you're waiting on FEMA to inspect the property? I can also try to restore a bike for you if you need it repaired right away. I am not a pro mechanic but have built a couple of bikes. DM me at your convenience. |
Thanks guys y'all are awesome. Another forum member I am friends with offered to come grab the bikes tomorrow and take them to his place and work on them. I gladly accepted! We appreciate all the volunteers to help. It sucks being stranded and unable to do anything. But having at least 1 bike for each of us to ride to work will go a long way toward helping our sanity lol!
Gotta get new helmets and gloves too now - all covered in mold. |
So a huge thanks to bkj, SAGit, and faulker479 for volunteering their time and effort to clean all of our bikes. We got them back today and it's amazing to see them after what they were half submerged. And for faulker479 for a new 105 cassette to replace the rusted flooded one from my Roubaix.
We seriously can't thank you guys enough. |

We were glad to return a small piece of normalcy to your world.
So what has the shop/ Specialized said about the Roubaix? Going to get a new set of wheels too since we tossed the rear one. Probably some cheaper Vueltas or maybe a cheaper set of H+Sons. We'll see. I have permission from teh wife :) |

As I feared/assumed, Specialized doesn't give two ****s about flood victims, and aren't doing anything via warranties or out of the kindness of their cold, black hearts, to fix flood damaged bikes. Bike Barn is doing full clean jobs for a good price though, and 20% of any labor. They will replace the BB, and clean everything else. Possible new rear derailleur but not sure yet. I'll do everything else myself, like put the new cassette on and everything, since I can save money there.

It was my pleasure to get you back on the bike. The bike community would not be the same without you riding and blogging. Besides, I wouldnt want you to miss the MS150 this year. So please let me know if you need help to rebuild your house.
R2R already sent out a reminder this week about early registration. |
Seems as good a place as any to keep sharing how life is just destroying me this year......
Our apartment got broken into today while we were at work. They stole my 27" iMac, my wife's MacBook and her jewelry. They left the tv and our iPad minis. Thankfully all 3 pets were here and ok. And the 4 bikes we just got back were also still here. Just overall a great freaking month it's been. |

My MacBook Air and iMac show up there when they are powered on and have access to wi-fi. |

Just like Ford, Chevy and the rest of the money grubbing car company's don't give a **** about flood victims and Arendt doing anything about warranties. Just like all the furniture manufacturers aren't doing anything about warranties. And how about all those evil refrigerator, washing machine and other appliance companies who don't give a **** and aren't warrantying all the flood damaged stuff.

congrats to the Astros today. sad to see the Sox season end, but somebody's gotta win. good luck this year!

An Astros World Series win would be a huge boost of moral for this city after the hurricane.
