Bayou riding in Houston

Anyone else ride along the bayous in Houston? I've figured out how to connect a few of them and can ride for miles with only a few street crossings.

Do tell - I'd be interested to know your routes, since I can't seem to figure out how to avoid the busy street crossings. And trying to access the Buffalo Bayou from my house north of 10 is an exercise in road frustration.

How can we get the county/city to start putting trails along all the bayous and flood control ditches? Talk about miles of good, car-free routes! Even simple packed dirt/gravel trails would get my vote and use.

Good luck with that. The rails to trails through the Heights has been in the works for 8 years, and still no sign of development. Biking is not a priority for the city.

Paved bike paths or dirt? I want to start riding greater distances now that I am on vacation. The only paved path along bayous I have used until now is along Braes Bayou between the West Loop and the Medical Center, and that only occasionally, and not recently. Houston is indeed not very bike-friendly, and the mayor, though a cyclist, has done little to change that. I see him at Bikesport sometimes, but I doubt he would listen much to me, as I live in Bellaire and am therefore not able to vote in Houston.
