I am certain that the big factor in long life for them, whatever model, is to do regular cleaning. I use a rag and small screwdriver and get as much gunk out as I can, then use wd40 and spray all inside. Gets stuff out between the spring pieces and cleans all pivot areas.
Like all drivetrain parts, keeping them clean of abrasive gunk and properly lubed=good life and good action.
Never clean em and they ain't gonna last as long.

I highly recommend the A-530s as others have as well. The shop I work at tends to never have them in stock as they sell quickly.
For shoes I am very happy with my Giro Terraduros, they have a Vibram outsole so they are walkable and a solid ratcheting buckle closure so they are secure. If you want lighter and stiffer go with the Code VR70s or the Empire VR90 which both feature a carbon outsole with Vibram and the Empires use good ole' laces.
