Help with route??
Touring from Vancouver down the coast to Lake tahoe before crossing Nevada on Highway 50.
Questions is how far down the coast should I go before leaving the coastal road 101 and crossing California?
I was thinking of perhaps turning off 101 just south of Crescent city and take the 169 down to 96. Should I go north on 96 and cross nr 5 at Mt. Shasta or go south on 96 and on to 299 and cross nr 5 at Redding?
Other suggestions are most welcome, but prefer mountain roads and scenery to heavy traffic

Hooked on Touring
Howdy again -
You're not going to get through on Hwy 169 to Hwy 96 unless you use the jetboat tour service - which can be pretty pricey. 169 branches off of US 101 then dead ends. It starts up again about 10 miles upriver and then connects with Hwy 96. Hwy 299 out of Eureka is pretty busy and has some BIG climbs. Hwy 96 itself is really nice.
The stretch of US 101 from Eureka down to Leggett requires you to be on 4-lane sections of highway part of the time - I really don't like that - since you have all those car zooming by - even if it is totally safe on the shoulder.
I haven't been on the road from Gold Beach to Grants Pass - but I hear it's really nice. From Grants Pass you can head up to Crater Lake and then down to Klamath Falls or directly to Klamath Falls (OR 66 has a lot less traffic than OR 140). Almost all the roads in NE Calif have fairly low traffic volumes - except US 97 and US 395. The scenery is pleasant - not spectacular - but the riding is great. Don't overlook the paved county roads - like around Lava Beds, Bieber, and between Susanville and Truckee.
Best - J

Thanks again. Didn't see that gap in highway 169.
That route from Golds beach to Grants Pass sounds interesting, so think I'll pass on NW California and head east and into California from Klamath Falls on 139. From there down to Lassen and through the Sierras to tahoe and into Nevada.
Haven't decided where to go from Baker, Nev yet. Want to go to Tetons and Yellowstone, but have time to do a loop. Perhaps shoot through southern Utah and into Colorado and then north??
Don't know, but the route from Baker on route 6 up to Salt Lake seems uninteresting? Zion/Bryce are perhaps a little too south so maybe somehow cross towards Moab?

Wow, your trip sounds great. Am thinking of doing something similar, starting either here in the SF Bay area or in the Moab area. I'm thinking Moab is going to be too hot really soon, though....
I rode the WA/OR coast a couple years ago, and Golds Beach is kind of the RV mecca, as I recall. Anyone have any specific information about the RV traffic eastbound from there? At the very least, you could just do it on a weekday.
I drove Moab to SLC recently, was on 6 for a while... there are some significant mountain passes but it's monotonous (but not ugly) scenery. Long distances between towns. There is a strong south wind, however.
