Looking at a used LHT at a local bike shop. It's olive green, but they don't know what year it is. Does anyone there have an answer for me?

Directly quoted from the Surly website FAQs | The Information Hole | Surly Bikes:

"You know that serial number on the underside of your bottom bracket? No?! Ok, so flip your bike over and take a look closely at the bottom bracket shell (the cylinder at the bottom of the frame around which your crank rotates). There will be a code stamped into the shell starting with the letter "M". Sometimes this stamp has a bunch of paint that has collected in it but look closely, it is there, I promise. The following number after the M signifies the last digit(s) of the production year of your frame. So, for instance, M2598144 was made in 2002, M8128666 was made in 2008 and M10034269 was made in 2010. Now write down the serial number and keep it somewhere you can find it in case your bike gets stolen. This might be the only identifiable mark on your frame if it comes back to you!"

Surly has all their catalogs online. You could check there, assuming it's the original paint job.

I just did a Google search and came up with 2008-2009 ( they keep same colors for 2 years).

I doubt it matters .. all that changes is the paint color.

WRT to LHT framesets, rear dropouts changed to Breezer-style in 2008/9. Fork changed in 2012 to include bosses in fork crown. No other changes (that were made public knowledge) other than color since beginning of model production in 2002.

olive green=2008 Some of the olive green (darker color than the original sage green) have Breezer dropouts:

If your olive green LHT has breezer dropouts, then it's late production 2008, or 2009, since color runs didn't necessarily start/end with calendar years.

Olive green, great color = 2008. I loved mine but traded it for a LHT Deluxe frame (S&S couplers & mid-night blue). There's only subtle changes from year to year, none that would concern me. If it fits and you like it, get it.

Nope. At some point after '11 there were component and rim changes.

What rims does it have?

Is that folder available for public view? I enjoy looking at loaded LHT/DT bicycles.

They said they weren't sure of the year and, at the time, I didn't know where the serial number was located.

By the way, you probably need to work on your approach to answering people's questions.

I have a '10 or 11 in black. Not sure which. I had an earlier model but it was stolen out of my house near the end of '11.

Does it have Alex Adventurer rims? Mine does, which is why I asked. I think those rims were discontinued and that later model LHTs have something else.

Not sure about the rims. Going this weekend to get more details. The serial number begins with M11....., so I ASSUME that it is an '11. The color is green.

I'm no expert on this stuff, so I'm asking people who I hoped would know. There are some of you here that seem very knowledgeable, but don't seem like you want to help. I am retired and spend a lot of time on forums, mostly hockey and bicycles. I know your type is out there, but still will never understand why someone would answer the way you do. If you think I'm asking too much and don't want to help, then simply don't answer. Easy enough?

I've had two different Surlys - a Cross Check (which I bought new & sold 4 years later for $99 less than when I bought it new! In my market, they hold their value). I bought. 2015 Straggler 659b in August that I love. They're not the lightest bike, but you can transform them into just about anything.

OK, I went back to look at the bike today. It does have a M11..... serial number, but according to the catalog (thank you Velocivixen), it is a 2012. It is dark green, not olive green, so my bad. The rims are Alex rims of some kind. Pretty solid looking. Although I really don't need everything that is included, it does have a Brooks B17, nice pump, Topeak rear rack, and a light set. Oh, disc brakes. Never had those before.

I can't ride right now because of cataract surgery, but did ride it the other day. Pretty darn sweet. I've been salivating about a LHT for quite awhile now, so I bought it. They are putting interrupter brake levers on for me and raising the bar a bit. I've been riding a flat bar for some time now, but really want to try this. I did 120 miles on the Katy trail last weekend and, although some of it is on me for not being as ready as I should have been, I had some real pains on the ride. Back and neck and even my bottom on my pretty well broken in Brooks. I want all of the hand positions. I really want to take some longer tours next summer. Also want to at least do a metric century next summer, too.

They have used several greens, the original color was sage green and some have called that olive green too, that was in 2004, or maybe earlier.

Get a professional bike fit by someone who understands touring.

It will be worth the money.

The shop is going to do that. I do trust them, plus I know how I want to feel.

I'm dying to ride, not just because a new bike is coming, but I just want to get out there.
