We started in Towanda and went counter clockwise.

It's a super hilly route with not a lot of services or re-supply opportunities outside of Dandy gas station food; we went four days without seeing a traffic light. So we carried a lot of food and struggled up the 17% grades. Oh how I wish I was younger and fitter! |

Zoinks! I car camped at Ricketts Glen S.P. I was worried that my Subaru wasn’t going to make it up the hill that leads to the park from the south.

Ouch, those gradients are some serious % numbers!
You've really got to have a low geared bike for that sort of stuff or it's going to be even less fun than with a bike that has what I consider a proper touring low gear -- I feel around 17 gear inches is nice. |

My Bike Friday All-Packa's lowest gear is 15.7". My partner's Surly Ogre's lowest gear is 19.3". I was able to crawl up at 2.5mph.
I've been borrowing a bike for a number of weeks with a low of about 33 g.i. and while I was very aware of what I was getting into, it's been tough on the old legs |

Ya, my troll is about 17 g.i. with 2in tires and I've been able to crawl up grades like that and steeper.

You know that a road is steep when you consider an 8% section as "taking a break"

Did you have any strength left to do the entire waterfall hike?
We did see a number of waterfalls on the way there, at the nearby Falling Waters campground, and alongside some of the gravel climbs. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f07586ad22.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...9aaf1b10f4.jpg We also stopped to take a photo of a pond only to discover the beaver dam that created the pond. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...8ca84ffcbf.jpg |
I remember that week. Three days of 90s in the city then a temperature crash Wednesday night.
Can’t blame you. The hike is somewhat treacherous when it’s wet. The trail along the biggest falls requires walking on rock. They get slippery when wet. It’s better to do the loop clockwise. That way, you are walking up on the slippery parts. Safer than going down those parts. |
