CreakingCrank's photo reminded me of this sight I rode past in the valley heading to Lolo Pass on my 2017 tour. Often it's the people who you run across while touring that give you the best memories and stories. But I also have worked in a bike shop for far too many years to not also know that bikes can be the last resort of those who can't find a better way in the world, for whatever reasons. This time I stayed on my side of the road and only paused. This guy was walking his two rigs, a couple hundred feet at a time then going back for the other one. Andy

Wow. Please do archive this photo on the "massive rigs" thread too. Perfect.

str, that's quite a tree!

Doug, I love your pics as they always include people, especially your family. It's a contrast to mine which almost never have people (other than me) because I tour alone and am somewhat introverted around strangers.
It's like getting to see: Oh. that's what that is like :)

Doug64 12-21-18 09:49 PM

Dale, It sounds like we are about even. I really enjoy your outstanding landscapes; and am a little envious (in a good way), because my landscapes are pretty mediocre.

Hey, I haven't posted to this thread in awhile now. Here ya go, with bicycle. 😎 I got rained on good in Pie Town, then snowed on later the same morning. I took a ride in a pickup truck, with no regrets. 🙄😉 https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...69e5357541.jpg

Don't take this wrong way, but a news article in Australia last year said pictures of the Eiffel Tower are illegal to the French. With so many taken (including ours) how can they say that?

By the way, I like the colour of the fenders on the bike in the first pictures, especially as the bike portrays to me a Ti or aluminium finish. They also go with the bar tape. Nice.

Those were the only brown fenders I was able to find at my LBS. They are inexpensive plastic Sunlite fenders. You really can't see it in the picture, but they have the faux wood finish. The saddle and bar tape are matching Brooks leather in Honey. It does give the bike a nice Ti sheen, but it's a cromoly Trek 520.
I had not heard about how the French view photos of the Eiffel Tower. Really weird.

First I’ve heard of that. Given it’s a major tourist attraction for the French themselves, I’d take it with a large pinch of salt!

Hmmm... pictures of it at night apparently have been illegal since 1985. Links on stories about it below:

That is simply mind bending. It stinks to think something is standing right there in full view of the public realm and yet you'd have to pay a licensing fee to distribute an image of it.

Rowan 01-07-19 02:42 PM

Yes, but I can think some things are weird in countries other than France. It's all the fun and occasional perils of international (and even local) bicycle touring.

Why would a picture of a boat be against the law?

I have a vague memory of when this type of copyright law came into being, even in Canada. The whole "lighting setup being an art work" or whatever phrasing was the same thing, and if I recall (and it was a long time ago, I may not have the details right) it applied to shooting other buildings and whatnot, and using the images commercially, ie in image banks and such.
What I do remember was thinking how bloody daft that sounded, but as I was only shooting a bit of stock stuff back then, it was never a problem for me.
As a photographer, what bugged me was that a good photo isnt because of the subject generally, but the natural lighting, camera placement and all that, so it seemed over the top to say that lighting on a building or whatever was a copyrighted "thing" in itself....but there you go, these laws came into place and probably are still applicable (but again, Im not properly informed).

Happy Feet 01-12-19 08:40 PM

Nice pic Doug!

My sense is that the licensing thing would only become an issue if someone were including it in some sort of large commercial advertising campaign ie. blatantly profiting from their lighting design.

Now, if those ooh la la Parisian crushed velvet saddle covers Doug's been flogging ever take off he's going to be in a real international pickle!

Not really a touring picture but...

Took the British Columbia Minister of Health for a little ride the other day :)

An action photo to balance off all the beautiful scenic shots. Four of my boys as we're rolling south last season. (I really need to get back to an SLR)
