That's a really cool image Doug.
Pennyfarthing type bike? Graphically just really neat. Love it. |
David, your feedback is much appreciated. Thank you.
We found the museum while looking for a bike shop. I had a pretty funny incident there, and it made my day. My wife and I were still in our bike clothes as we toured through the museum. As I passed a pretty young woman she said in English, "you have really nice legs." When I said "thank you" she got all embarrassed and flustered. I thought my wife, who was just around the corner, was going to split a gut because she was laughing so hard. My wife still kids me about it, but also agreeshttps://www.bikeforums.net/images/smilies/smile.gif |
See, it's almost always a women's fault, that us guys get in trouble. 😉

Thank you for posting this.
It is Vaux-de-Cernay Abbey built in the early 1100's, from the earliest days of the Cistercian Order (Trappists). -Tim- |
Indeed ! Have you been there before ? And you're welcome. I've been in the area a couple times already (it's one of the easiest/closest escapade from Paris) but had never stopped there. I've stayed a while wandering around, it's really really beautiful and peaceful. I might bring a proper film camera next time to get better shots than that of my phone.
Also of note, from later that day, the Dampierre Castle : https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2e596e2505.jpg |

The architecture was immediately recognizable - the arches and rose window, etc. Thanks again. I love seeing the old monasteries. Thoughts of the monks who gave their lives to work and prayer (ora et labora) and all the prayers offered in that place take my breath away. -Tim- |

I have not been there but am very attracted to Cistercian spirituality and actually spent a short time at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit here in Georgia, USA.

I know this seems a bit odd, but that is a wonderful post in its own way. I am not religiously based, but some of the most wonderful experiences for me and Machka together on touring in France and even England and Scotland has been seeing the incredible buildings that are part of religious history of those two countries.

For those who believe - and I acknowledge that religion is a banned topic - these places contain the very intense and lingering presence of God. These are sacred spaces, even if they are no longer in use. The word "palpable" comes to mind. Your marriage to Machka is no less sacred. That's my belief. I envy you both who share your love for each other and for cycling. You are both blessed. -Tim- |
Tim, here are a couple more you might relate to. I took these while we were attending mass at the Cologne Cathedral. I know you'll probably get on my case about taking pictures during mass, but the Bishop was performing mass with 21 alter servers, and I could not resist.
When we are touring in Europe, I proposed a guideline to my wife: we should only stop at every third, old church. Otherwise, we would not get anywhere. Do you think she listens to me?:) Cologne Cathedral https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b05610c3_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3646aee5_c.jpg |

thats a neat place Doug. I didnt recognize the name and wondered if I had ridden past it on my trip so long ago--but checked and it was just past where I stopped and was picked up by car from a friend who was living near San Fran at the time, going back with him and visiting San Fran and doing stuff with him for a week or so.

I'm about 10 miles from Kingman (again, lol), taking a break at the library. |
No, not on your case at all. I think it is completely appropriate. Thanks for the photos. Look at all the incense!
Man, I'd love to serve at that church. I was Master of Ceremonies for the Archbishop of Atlanta once. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5afa04bd4d.jpg

STR,
I've wondered how you dealt with the language issue in your extended travels to Romania and Georgia. Do you speak Russian or do you rely mostly on gestures? Thanks for sharing your grand adventures. |
|
Vermont? Cool. 👍 Did you happen to run into Darryl, and his two brothers, Darryl & Darryl? 😁 Either you remember Bob Newhart, or you think I've finally cracked for good. 🤔😉
|
I love Bob Newhart
We started on Burlington side and biked the causeway to North Hero where we camped at Goose Bay campground. Next day we rounded the top , over the bridge and entered New York. Biked to Port Kent to catch the ferry only to find out the ferry was not operational due to flood water level. It is supposed to open this Thursday. We camped at Ausable Chasm campground and next day biked to Plattsburg to catch the ferry to Grand Isle where we reconnected with South Hero and the causeway back to the car. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c6b7d4edad.jpg

So obviously the little causeway shuttle ferry was doing it's thing over the part where the bridge is no longer there.
Haven't been on the causeway in years, will keep your loop and campgrounds in mind, could be an idea for this summer. |
