Here's my super heavyweight at the start of the mountains going to Canmore. Then in Washington on Long Beach and the other 2 Oregon. The grocery bags refuse to leave my bars. LOL. But they also help dampen the steering.
I have NO camping stuff. 120 lbs, so what?? LOL

Been around there, a few times. Nice spots, in the region.

Came out of the road from Challis up through Salmon, and into Montana, then tooled around north of Jackson a bit. Beautiful area. Much of it looked like the photo above.

One of my favorite places, between the months of May and October that is.

The Byway is part of the Great Divide route that was paved in 2008. The last two times I rode it I saw participants in the race. From Wise River I head east then south to Melrose. From there, you can take a paved road to Dillon or tackle a really cool, 25 mile dirt road that takes you to Twin Bridges, but you need the right equipment. I’ve pushed the envelope three times riding my LHT with 37c tires. Tough going on the stretches that are hill, bumpy and somewhat rocky. But nice scenery and nearly total solitude. Greatest number of vehicles I encountered was 4. Far more free range cattle.

Notice my front rack is crooked in the third photo, which was taken after we got back on pavement. I had lost a bolt thanks to the bumps. Didn't notice until camp, which was only a mile or so away.

The red areas along the road's edges are not bike lanes. This is a two-way road and the "red" lanes are to be used when cars pass each other.

Last week began with my wife and I checking the gear we were planning to take on a tour next month. We had a few hours of panic when we could not find our tent. It was not in its usual spot, which was a mystery, as we keep our gear pretty well organized. We finally remembered that we packed it when we were notified of a potential evacuation due to wildfires burning north-east and south-east or our town last summer. It still took us another hour to find it.

We wanted to set the tent up and familiarize ourselves with it, because we only used it a few times in 2019 when it was new. While looking at the tent my wife had an idea: let’s just do a S24O at one of the five very nice state or county parks located within a 20 mile radius of our home, and check out all of our gear. We were glad we did, and it was fun.

We dumped our gear and went for the ice cream:)

Doug, that's a really neat causeway thing. Was it originally for trains? Looks a bit steep for trains, but it's quite the extensive wooden supporting structure under it isn't it?
neat photoAnd must have been really neat riding over it

I always set up my tent before a trip, has nothing to do with not remembering how it goes up.

One of my tents has a little plastic window glued into the fly, one time when I set it up before a trip I found that the glue was no longer holding. Testing equipment for another trip, set up a tent and discovered that the "tape" in one of the fly "taped" seams was no longer attached to the fly, thus the seam sealing had fallen off. Tents, camp stoves, just about everything else that is mechanical gets tested at home before a trip. Preparing for one trip found that the gasket on the lid of the fuel tank on a liquid fuel stove would no longer hold pressure, thus could not pump up the stove. But I bought that stove in the 70s, so I can understand that things like that can age. I always want to make sure that there are no stupid surprises on day one on a trip that an inspection before the trip could have prevented.

I made that mistake once with my defective LHT frame, will never make that mistake again.

Yes. It’s the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes. I believe there was originally a swing bridge span to allow for the passage of water craft.

Interesting history behind the genesis of the trail:

Good point:thumb:

Thanks for posting a link to the bridge information. I didn't appreciate the complexity of the construction, and can't remember looking at it from an angle where we could see the swing portion.
