Need Help with Bar/Grip/Shifter Situation

I installed my new bars, which are just a slightly different version of trekking bars that came stock on my bike, installed a set of Ergon GC1 grips, and then wrapped the rest on my 2016 Novara - Safari.

The issue I've had is that the grips just can't be moved far enough out to the edge of the bars to allow proper room for the thumb-shifters, so they are poking into my hand. But even besides that I don't really like where the grips are forcing my hands to be so close together. I ended up having to cut quite a bit of the grip off as it is. Perhaps I should ditch the grips for some others that will be more accommodating here?

I'm not sure what to do at this point. I suppose I could try to find some way to either mount the thumb-shifters so that they shift and rotate vertically instead of horizontally, or perhaps switch over to barcons instead. I'm including a picture so that you can see what my setup and situation is.

I'm considering ditching the Ergons and going for the "MTN-1" grips on this page. As long as I can remove that end cap and slide on the way they need to go this might be a good, simple, and relatively low-cost solution. Thoughts?

I've never used trekking bars, but using such bulbous grips there seems like a bad idea. It seems to me that you'd want to either use a much more cylindrical grip that doesn't force a single hand position, or just use bar tape. Grips that have a lot of structure are mostly for when you have an exact spot that you want to treat very strongly as a "primary" hand position.

I'm seriously leaning on going for those Grab-Ons I posted, but I'd like to get them quick. I wonder if a local shop would carry these, or if there's an online retailer that can get them to quickly? Is this an item a shop would likely carry? Do you know of any online retailers that can get a pair to me quickly?

From: Thailand..........currently Nakhon Ricefield, moving to the beach soon.

Bikes: inferior steel....alas....noodly aluminium assploded

had the same problem come up when installing trekking bars.
the thick ergon grips are too long, won't flex around the curve
in the bar.

i got some of these grips. there's usually a small end cap that
pops off for when you want to use bar-end mirrors. if not, just
use a pen-knife.

it should blend right in with the 12" foam grab-ons that cover
the rest of the bars.

local lbs should have them, wally-world maybe. definitely
on amazon or ebay.

OK, thanks saddlesores. I just ordered these ones. I'll report back with how they work out. I just didn't have time to wait on the other "Grab-On" brand I wanted to try.

The around town bike I used last year had butterfly bars. I just wrapped them with bar tape from top to bottom. Comfortable and uniform. Just make sure to wrap the tape so the open end is facing down.

Over thinking this a bit?* ? Ive found 2 layers of padded tape is quite satisfactory .. wear padded gloves..

there are long tubes of the foam to slide over all .. most commonly found is quite soft..

* I guess it's something to do for the 6 months till spring, in the North..
