I ordered a set of those this morning in 35mm that I'm gonna install on top of some 28mm tires on my Trek Elance.

I run Schwalbe marathon supreme evolutions on my cross check and my tourer, I like them, haven't flatted on them yet either.

I have the silver VO "hammered" fenders on my Rivendell. 45 mm fenders over 650 x 38 mm tires. I've had them for a couple years and they've held up well.

My only complaint is that they have no safety quick release. I think a safety release is hugely important, because it helps prevent the fender from jamming if you pick up a stick in the wheel. So, I added the PDW FMF safety tabs. They fit on the VO stays, and they use a grub screw which makes stay length adjustment much easier.

the VO is way out of my price range just now but have to say i'd love to buy them for the new frame.

Hand-hammered fenders look kinda cool in a low-key way. If I was getting fenders for looks I'd go for Woody's. VO doesn't have mud-flap AFAIK.

impressive how low they go in the front, plus that mudflap is extra special. question for you. are they designed specifically for certain bikes or are they adjustable? I see that the supports kinda wrap around the outside of the fender - doesn't appear to have a way to adjust them

Woody's don't come with a mudflap either, but you can install mudflaps from numerous manufactures, Brooks, VO, Berthoud and a ton of boutique folks.

The adjustment point is at the frame and fork, fit them, and then clip off the excess strut with a small pair of bolt cutters. Looking at that photo of mine, I see that I need to adjust the fender line on my front fender, I had a stick get wedged under it a while back and had to loosen it out on a ride to remove it and I a did a crummy job of putting it back together.

Unfortunately, SKS and VO use totally different stays so they're not compatible. The PDW tabs are compatible with round fender stays, like used by VO, PDW, Honjo, and Berthoud.

When I use SKS fenders, I add another set of the Secu-clips to the rear fender as well.

Previously, I ruined my rear SKS fender one morning when I picked up a big stick in my rear wheel. The stick shoved the fender stays forward and accordion-folded the fender under the brake bridge. I skidded to a stop safely, but that fender was toast. It would have survived if I had used the secu-clips.

I have cheapo Planet Bike fenders w/o mudflap. Today I was putting a rubber shim on a light bracket: I had ordered a large strip of rubber & was wondering what to do with the 99% left over--now I realize it'll be perfect for a mud flap.

These are VO fenders on my Heron. They've been on there for almost 10 years and have been completely trouble free. BTW, the reason you don't see a quick release feature on aluminum fenders is because they're thin enough that they'll fold up before the wheel would ever lock. Also the stays are aluminum vs. steel as on most plastic fenders. This set, hardware and all, weighs about as much as a 2/3 full water bottle.

I have the Zeplins on my Disk Trucker. They are nice. I ride a lot of hard trails (75-80% of my yearly miles) and they keep the flung dirt, sand, and dust down plus water spray when I ride when its wet. They perform very well. They hold up well also. One of my riding buddies has had a couple sets of composite fenders on his LHT and none of them held up. At some point they would usually shatter during a ride. Based on that experience I went straight to the metal fenders. I probably have around 2500 miles with them. I've had a stick catch in my front spokes and jam in the front fender stay, the stick didn't survive but the stays and fender did. I made it out without a broken spoke too.

Thanks.

I think the VO hammered fenders in black would look awesome on the right bike. Go for it. They're a little more work to install than some fenders, but since they now come pre-drilled, it shouldn't too bad. Just remember, the fender should be a minimum of 10mm wider than the tire. The ones on my Heron were advertised as 45mm, but they actually measure 48.

My only concern with black fenders would be upkeep. Any scrapes or scratches will show thru to the silver aluminum underneath. The beauty of polished aluminum is that you can just polish out any marks and keep them looking new.

Berthoud of France , had natural Black Carbon Fiber Mudguards .. since you are back in savings Mode ..

And another material, Wood.. Planet Bike (US Brand) Grasshopper mudguards Laminated Bamboo.. Paint It black .

I see online, UK distributors with the same PB Lights called a Different brand sell there, so, maybe the Mudguards do too ?
