They are going to have to do something. There are people living along that stretch with a huge investment in real estate. Not to mention the lose in revenue for tourism. It has to be a challenge to live there even under the best of conditions. I can't imagine what it must be like now. I was reading the blog about picking up supplies. Can you imagine?
Does anyone know where the electrical power comes from in that area? Is it locally produced or does it come from outside the community? If local then fuel might become an issue.

But, don't confuse my confidence that this would be solved (for bicyclists), which IMO depended more on local initiative than state agencies. I'm still not convinced that they'll finish the replacement bridge on or close to schedule, but in the meantime it'll be passable to bicyclists.
Also, though I have some degree of confidence that this highly visible repair of a popular route will be completed fairly expediciously, it doesn't translate to a general view. Your short list of lapses and failures doesn't surprise me. Governments have amazing ability to avoid dealing with festering sores, and seem to prefer heroic efforts after a problem is in the headlines. The leaky roof dilemma seems to apply to things like fixing the Oroville Dam. You can't fix a roof when it's raining, and it doesn't leak when it's not.
Unfortunately, the immediacy of some of the needed road repairs will probably cause yet more delays on stuff that may be more important.

To all our Big Sur visitors, particularly bicyclists …
I have been getting a lot of requests lately from bicyclists and others about the use of the trail that is being constructed partially by locals for locals through a closed area, and I would offer this observation: the community does not think this (the use of the trail by bicyclists or others) is a good idea. It is narrow and steep, and full of steps. We are trying to heal. The path is an emergency measure for those who live here who are trying to survive – separation from loves ones; separation from work and home; and separation from children and their schools. It is our way of surviving, not a way to welcome guests. We would ask the bicycling community and others to honor and respect the healing we are trying to obtain in a difficult situation and time. I know you would love to experience the coast without all the cars, so would we. However, it is not just the bridge, it is the other two problems – Paul’s Slide and Mud Creek, one of which will be closed to visitors all of April and probably May as well. So the trail will not get you down the coast. There are other closures preventing a through passageway.

These locals who have decided to inhabit Paul’s Slide and Mud Creek are not exactly the sharpest tools in the shed. Although I feel some sympathy for their plight. I'd have no qualms about making my way on a single-one-way passage on something as low-impact as a bicycle.

I'll bet that if you called a facility about lodging, then asked if it was possible to visit despite no bridge, they'd say "of course". Maybe not today or tomorrow, but soon.

^^Yes. If they don't allow people into the area, the few stores and cafes will be no more.
I'm well aware of the locals, having taken this road many years on bike, motorcycle and auto.
I expect by summertime it will all even out.

It's early yet. Give them a bit more time to reconcile themselves that it's going to be a while, and they need a reasonably passable trail.
I'm sure that once reality sets in, they'll be open to making the trail open to cyclists who may support their local businesses. Andrew Molera, Pfeiffer, Julia Pfeiffer Burns state parks remain closed indefinitely.
Botcher's Gap and Pfeiffer Beach are also closed to the public.
Those hoping to reach Big Sur by way of Highway 1 will have to reroute before hitting the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge. Motorists are advised to take State Route 1 from Carmel to south of Palo Colorado in Monterey County and north from Cambria to Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo.

Unfortunately, it skips the most scenic and normally lowest car-traffic stretch of Highway 1.
