I just popped in to say the same thing. With my original plan, I was supposed to pass through yesterday or the day before and would have had to take the detour. Instead, I decided a couple of days into my trip that my mileage goals were too ambitious if I wanted to do anything other than race daylight to every campsite. So my "detour" involves Amtrak from Cumberland after after a leisurely ride down the GAP. I'll do the C & O when I have time to do it more slowly, and hopefully when it's dry and the Paw Paw is open.
