Where I live nobody rides Campagnolo race bike stuff, so any parts failures of those bikes, have special order delays
of several days..

Bike tourists from elsewhere discover this..

early this summer a Chorus Carbon piece in the RD broke, the replacement , a Potensa had to be ordered..

but plenty of food, drink & hotel rooms , so it was not a uncomfortable stay.

Bikes: 2013 Surly Disc Trucker, 2004 Novara Randonee , old fixie , etc

I recently read about hydraulic shifters (ie Acros), interesting concept (light & responsive) but expensive & limited utility for touring. I think electronic (or hydro) shifting will remain rather expensive for some years since vast majority (in US at least) of cyclists don't ride in the rain/mud so don't have problems with cables getting gummy.

I have a 2009 Surly LHT complete build and I do a tour every year 1500 miles or so and ride it a few thousand miles every year. I have only ever replaced wearable parts chain cassette tires only once to Schwab Marathon plus. I did replace the wheels only after a car hit me in the front wheel and split it in halve but I am glad to now have a Dyno hub for charging. The only upgrade I have made was to the braking system. The rest of the bike is completely stock and I am setting out on a tour starting tomorrow it will be up to 4 thousand miles with pretty much a stock Surly build.

I will probably never have electronic shifting because that is one more thing to worry about charging especially on tour with some days of 10 to 12 hours of riding.
