reliable rack panniers system

I'm looking at getting the Ibera rack and panniers:
RACK:
https://www.amazon.com/Ibera-Bike-Ra..._&dpSrc=detail
TRUNK:
https://www.amazon.com/Ibera-Bike-Tr...DS5M79HJEP0NSP
PANNIERS:
https://www.amazon.com/Ibera-Bicycle...DS5M79HJEP0NSP

I'd like to use the trunk for taking gear on day rides and I like the clip on feature, the straip on ones are unstable if there is much weight in them. However, this Ibera model trunk looks too large for day trips. There is some feedback on amazon site about failures in the rack which concern me.

anyone else have a reliable rack-pannier-trunk system they are happy with.

Tubus &.Ortlieb are a popular, proven combination, I see a lit if it on the Oregon Coast during summer Cycle-touring season

I know nothing of your amazon finds..
After touring with rain covers over a very nice sewn bag set for many years, I bought the waterproof gear,

(I live in the north-wet)

a sewn together bag cannot be as waterproof as welded seam assembled bags...

Never heard of the Ibera brand. The rack's very inexpensive, but you may have heard, "You get what you pay for."

I've got an inexpensive trunk pack, but it's only good for a rain jacket and snack. If you're going for more than an extended day ride, you'll want real panniers. As fietsbob notes, it's really hard to beat the combination of Ortlieb waterproof panniers on Tubus racks.

It's hard to beat Tubus + Ortlieb. Although initially expensive, they are a good value in the long run as both rack and bags will outlast lesser gear, and perform better the whole time. Tubus racks have an outstanding warranty.

There was a thread on here a while back regarding these Ibera panniers, in essence, asking the same thing. I thought the OP eventually bought them but to my knowledge, there was never a follow-up report on how they performed.

Nobody wanted to follow up because nobody wants to admit being cheap was a bad idea. It might spread and people might start buying quality stuff instead of the cheapest thing on Jeff Bezos Bike Shop dot Com.

Tubus racks are super reliable and if you can brake one in normal use touring you must be going crazy with it. Ortlieb or Arkel makes super nice panniers that are durable and long lasting. Arkel sent a piece of the Cordua fabric they use for their panniers with a slice half way down and you were expected to try and rip it and I couldn't find anyone who could even tear another thread from it.

Stuff does cost money but for a one time investment that will last and last and last, I would say it is worth it in the end. I plan to have my panniers and rack for another 15 years at the very least and I have had them so far for about 5 years or so, so I figure they will be about $22 a year which isn't bad especially since they are paid off long ago.

Bikes: A steel framed 26" off road tourer from a manufacturer who thinks they are cool. Giant Anthem. Trek 720 Multiroad pub bike. 10 kids bikes all under 20". Assorted waifs and unfinished projects.

Can't get Tubus cheaper than this https://www.bike-components.de/en/tu...ackung-p62349/ but would fit best on a 26" bike

I could see this being accurate. I could also see a scenario where those who ask are new and dont return after asking. They came here for some info and dont follow up because they don't want to participate long term.

Ibera doesnt seem like some cheap brand. I see the brand on wedge bags, racks, and trunk bags as often as i see Axiom, Ortlieb, and Jandd. I see topeak more, but view Ibera in similar fashion.

also, im not sure how $150 for waterproof bags is being cheap. Ibera, like most brands, makes a wide range of products that meet target pricepoints.
https://www.amazon.com/Ibera-Bike-Pa.../dp/B07894R448

i have an Axiom rear rack that cost $27 and has lasted 4 years now. It isnt heavily used for daily transportation, but it is used regularly and has seen a few thousand miles of carrying bags on the side and/or on top. Its easily adjustable as ive fit it to a couple bikes, its sturdy, and iy has nice variability in mount location.
$27.
i have some Axiom bags that cost $75 total and arent waterproof. Love em. Half the weight of rubber waterproof bags and plenty durable for how i use them.

i mention axiom because it is often a brand that is viewed as 'discount' compared to Tubus and Ortlieb not only in price, but in quality.
Well yeah things that cost less may be lower quality, but they could still be high enough quality for the task at hand.

oh- ibera has a integrated rack and bag attachment system they market. That, to me, means they are trying to be a legitimate brand in the bag market and not just some cheapest thing on Amazon.

Clip on trunk for tubus rack?

I'm sold on the tubus - ortlieb system but would like a small clip on trunk for day trips. I can live with strapon but clipons are much cleaner.

You can buy the Ortlieb mounting parts* and alter a bag you like to use them,
Ortlieb gas a small suit / Briefcase like bag and a different QR mount to go with it. for top of the rear rack ..

*Spare and replacement parts availability is another advantage..

I recommend you look at European sellers for the Ortlieb City (Rollers) bags - front (Sport) and rear size (25L/40L per pair respectively) are available in black, red or white. City is the economy version of Classic Roller bags - they are less costly but delete the shoulder strap, inside pocket and overload capability of the Classic. City bags weigh ~30% less than Classic, due to less material required for the overloading capability of the Classic bags. Euro shops are not supposed to ship to USA customers according to vendor terms (because USA shops sell City/Ortlieb for more $), but some shops will, in the same way many Tubus sellers will ship to USA.

Easier to find than good deals on Ortlieb City bags, several Euro sellers (especially German) sell Tubus products to USA customers for significantly lower price than USA sellers. Shipping/handling fees for racks and bags to USA are a bit high. Some sellers have a fixed oversize S/H fee to USA - in this case it's smart to purchase bags and racks from these sellers (provided good prices on bags/racks) as this will result in lowest overall cost.

Euro shops must charge 19% VAT (value added tax) to customers in the EU, but VAT should not be charged to USA customer (assuming OP resides in USA). The shopping software used by most Euro sellers will not include VAT in total once you've indicated your shipping destination as USA.

Be aware that many USA banks' credit cards incur a foreign transaction fee (~3%) for international purchases. I believe Paypal does not charge this fee.

They make a clip/lock-on trunk bag.

I got my Tubus/Ortlieb from Bike-Components.de Great seller. Would buy again. IIRC their shipping to the USA is fixed at 25Euro. I got a Tubus Cosmo stainless steel rack and panniers for the cost of not even the US-cost of the bags.

In case you're curious....Tubus-Ortlieb distribute their own product in the USA. The very high prices you see in the USA are those that the company themselves set. Because they apparently don't want to sell well in the USA and scare off buyers with sticker shock.

That is true it could happen. Come and leave once your done.

I rarely see Ibera and when I do it is usually on lower end bikes.

$150 for their knock-off Ortliebs is not a good deal and way too expensive, like a lot of their stuff. I look at it and I see a similar design as other brands without the same quality. Maybe some of their stuff isn't bad but I never see it just cheap Chinese/Taiwanese knock-offs.
