Harsh Adventurers - Episode 2
Harsh Adventurers is a loosely organized group of friends who enjoy undertaking challenges with each other – usually, but not always, involving our bicycles. After completing a number of ‘mini-tours;’ mostly around the eastern seaboard, someone suggested that we really ought to ride our bikes across America. Arguments persist about who made the suggestion. Everybody swears it was them! The problem was that we were all still working and none of us was in a position to take the time off work to do the ride in the traditional way. We decided that the only solution was to do the ride in episodes, roughly one week per year, starting on the shores of the Pacific and ending somewhere on the shores of the Atlantic. To insure we covered every inch of the country, we would carry a railroad spike with us along the way. The last activity of each episode would be to bury the spike. The first activity of the next episode would be to dig it up and carry it to the end of the current episode where it would be buried again. Our goal is to bury the railroad spike (at sea) at a yet to be determined location on the Atlantic Ocean. Our journey should take 7 weeks, or 7 years, depending on your perspective.
This is the journal of our second episode, from Las Vegas NV to Flagstaff AZ. We are fortunate to have a support wagon this year driven by one of our group that injured his ankle just three weeks before departure day. His misfortune will go a long way towards making this adventure a success. We will be shuttled through the 1.3-mile-long Zion-Carmel Tunnel (no bicycles allowed) and our bikes will be transported around the Grand Canyon (also no bicycles allowed) while we hike across it from the north rim to the south rim. We hope to ride our bikes from Las Vegas to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, where one of us will drive the bikes (250 miles) to the South Rim. We will hike the Canyon, Rim-to-Rim, camping two nights (Bright Angel and Indian Garden) before collecting our bikes at the South Rim and riding them to Flagstaff AZ. This journal consists of a short daily summary, and a couple of picture and a few video collages summarizing our adventure. We enjoyed the adventure. We hope you enjoy the journal.
