My spd shoes are actually quite good for all day comfort. I've stayed with the same specialized model specially for this. What I meant is that it's nice to get out of sweaty shoes, so airing out the toes during the day just feels good, as does sitting on ground and putting the legs horizontal, but I'm very aware that this has come more with age.

I don’t have sore feet at the end of the day. I like the relatively “free” feeling. Just like I enjoy loose fitting clothing after riding. Also, it’s not rare that I’ll end up at a lake with a sandy shore or even a sandy campground. Don’t want sand in my riding shoes. Been there. Done that.
